I'm a bit embarrassed,

to find out last night that Snow Tiger is actually a female! I had always thought of her as being a male but this decision was made before she became mature enough to see the difference. She and Fawn were wrestleing on the bed last night after I was ready to turn out the light , that is when I noticed her. So, from now on she will be known as Snow Tigress, or Tigress!

I should have caught this obvious fact earlier, but you know how many of us are, after we make a decision about something it is sometimes overlooked in the face of facts!!!

The same goes for Orphan, that being such a physically a small black cat, is also female, What name could I call her? Orphina? Any ideas?

Karen, thanks so much for the poem. I tried to copy if off with my printer, but it would't take it, although it started to. so, I'll have to copy with a trypewriter

Randi, Ophelia is good a name as any, sounds better than "Obsidian", which would make a good name for a solid black male kitty. Thanks for the idea.

Wayne, do you have a word processing program on your computer? Open it to a blank screen. Then go to Karen's poem, highlight all the words, click on copy, go into the word processor screen and click on paste. You may have to do a little formatting, but, at least, the words are all there.

LOL, Wayne. I just have to tell you Tubby's story. I got him from a girlfriend when we were in our early 20's. She was much more interested in dating, makeup and clothes. She was moving into an apartment that didn't allow pets, and I had just bought a house so I said I would take him. He was only about 4 months old. She thought he was a female, and was the itsiest bitsiest little kitty she had ever seen - thus she called him Bitsy. I took her word on the female part of it and never bothered to check

but after about a day, I knew Bitsy was not the right name for her....him. She/he was a holy terror! My house was torn apart, my plants were in shreds and there weren't enough bandaids in the world to cover all the bites and scratches on my forearms. Bitsy this was not! Eventually she got to the point where I thought I should get her fixed, so I took her to the vet and said "I would like to have my kitten spayed." Well, the vet looked at me like

and kindly informed me that she was actually a he!

I said "Oh, ok then, neuter him."

Didn't matter to me what sex he was, he was just the best, neatest little black ball of fur I had ever had, and it didn't matter a wit if he was a girl or a boy.

So don't feel bad, and no reason to be embarrassed.

I thinks Snow Tiger is still a great name because there are female Tigers out there, but it's funny that Randi suggested Ophelia because that's exactly what I was thinking before I even read her post!

I can't talk though.........years ago my cat Liza (RB) had a litter of 5 kittens. We were wrong obout the sex of at least 2 of them. it is really hard to tell sometimes. I have heard of even vets getting it wrong.

My big boy, Kedi, on the other hand.........let's just say it was VERY obvious

Oh boy, am I glad to know that others have had the same experience with "mistaken identity" or something like that! In my case, it explains Emmett's name. A former petsitter asked me if Stump would like a buddy, I said yes, and soon she brought over an adorable kitten, about 4-5 months old, whose name was Emily. I didn't do any examining, but when I took "Emily" to the vet to talk about spaying, the vet took a closer look and said, "This is a he! You have a he!" And all I could say was, "Well, I guess the name Emily won't work anymore."

The vet suggested the name Emmett and that's what he answers to (well, when he feels like it...)

Thanks all for the LOL replies. Now I don't feel so embarrassed. But what amazed me is that tiger's gender was so obvious! Also that being nearly the same age as Zippy cat and Zebra cat, and yet didn't weigh near what either of those do. I should have caught her gender from her weight by her age. As you know a male weighs much more than a female even in the kitten stage. But regardless of her gender, she is a real blessing to have as a pet and has a much different personality than the others. And besides, she gets along with all of my furkids, no hissing or fighting.

Same here! We're all on the same wavelength today. Spooky!

A few years back, I was visiting with a friend who had just rescued a litter and she needed a bit of help Boxing one of the babies for the vet. She was sure 'he' was a he, I thought the kitten was a she (for the wrong reason

) I was teased greatly over the whole thing, but felt semivendicated when the vet confirmed she was a she.

I must admit that I've been fooled by a cat too!
In 1993 I got a tiny black and white female(or so I thought). We named her Chelsea. The kitten was super fluffy, so it was hard to get a good look "back there".
She went to the vet after we'd had her for about 2 weeks. The vet kindly pointed out that Chelsea was in fact a male.
At this point Chelsea was responding to his name, and so we decided to keep the name. In his 6 years he never seemed to mind having a female name!
