I hate Bloat :( i euthanized my dog. sooo sad.

i lost my dog to bloat.

please read the following...

i rushed my dog in to the emergency after noticing his distended stomach and he was not comfortable.

i had my dog euthanized given the following factors:

- he had acute bloat
- i was told chances of surviving operation was 65%
- cost was to range between $3500 - $6000 for treatment (is this normal??)
- he was 9 yrs 3 months old



i am so sad, i miss him so much and am filled with grief and regret.

- he was STRONG. walked every day.
- simba was a make neutered lab/dane mix
- what a wonderful dog

i am tearing myself apart with questions. we could have found the money...

could someone please tell me

a) that i did the right thing
or
b) i did the WRONG thing

and why?

So very sad, bloat is such a swift killer of big dogs. 9 years isn't bad for a Dane, he led a good, long life. And I am sure he will always be in your heart. At his age (for his breed), surgery would have been very risky anyway.

It is never an easy decision to make. I am sure you loved him very much. You'll be in our prayers.

Bloat runs in Great Danes,other large breeds and
deep chested dogs.


From what I understand acute bloat is when the
stomach actually twists.

Bloat runs in my dogs breed and I have always
worried about it.

would anyone know what the expected life duration of a DANE/LAB mix is? for a dane it's 6-8 correct? what is a lab's? would a mix just be the average?

he was absolutely gorgeous, i kissed him every day at least a few times. i loved him so much.

I am sorry for your loss. No matter what the life expectancy, losing a loved pet is very difficult.

The average age of a lab is between 10 and 12 years. Your dog was lucky to have someone who loved him so much. Bloat, if not treated immediately, is a very serious condition that almost always ends in death. It's happens so fast and by the time the owner realizes they need to seek medical attention, too much time has passed. I'm sure with your vet's recommendation and your heart speaking too you, the correct decision was made. It is easy to question "what if" but it will only tear you up more. In time you will learn to treasure the memories you had with your wonderful friend.

My most heartfelt sympathies on your great loss, Stefan What a very special pup your Simba was and we all know the incredible saddness and emptiness you are feeling right now Bloat comes on so suddenly and has such a high mortality rate, even with surgery. I understand that it's rare that a dog survies the surgery I do think you did the right thing under the circumstances, though I know what a difficult decision to make that was. I wish it could have been different Please take some small measure of comfort in remembering that during his liftetime, Simba was loved and cherished every moment of his life and that he left this earth, knowing that. Simba is healthy and whole now, waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge. And one day, in the distant future, you and your beloved Simba will be reunited in love. I'm so sorry for your loss, Stefan. I had never heard about Bloat until I took my new adoptee to the vet, and he warned me about deep-chested dogs being prone to this. My deepest sympathies.
