Interested in the Papillon breed...know much about em?

Hi all, my husband and i were throwing the idea around about the papillon breed, and may be interested in one in the future...of course if we consider this...i would check out rescue groups first, but i was just curious if anyone has any "hands on" information on this breed? Have you or do you own one? Know someone who does? What's the dog like? We like this breed, b/c its size would fit our house (small)...large dogs would be very welcomed...but our house doesnt quite comply with that I hear they are very friendly and do good with children...which is important to us...we have a son. I have looked at some shelters for small dogs (since large ones are out of the question right now)...but was just doing some research on these dogs, in particular. BTW, if i were to consider one from a breeder...are these dogs pricey?

Any info on the breed would be welcomed We definatley dont want to rush into anything...just curious, for now, about those cute butterfly eared dogs! Thanks.

    Hey there,

saw your post and thought that I might be able to help a bit. I don't personally own one (I'd like to in the future though) but I am very good friends with a couple of people who have numerous papillons, 7 between the two couples.

They are as you said small but they don't always act that way, they're sort of big dogs in small dogs bodies at least the ones that I have met are. But like most dogs they vary in temperment and all that fun stuff. Generally they all seem to be nice and loveable (at least all the ones that I have are) good with other dogs and kids, the only one that I know of that isn't good with kids is that way because of a past incident with a child and a couple of other things that happened before it came to live with my friend. The ones that I know range from minature border collie like in energy to laid back and calm taking everything in stride, but all of them take part in agility and a couple of other dog sports. Something that most of the dogs of the breed seem to excell at.

Health wise they don't seem to have any major problems at least that I know of, neither of the ones that I know have ever had to have extensive vet visits or bills.

Price wise they can be quite expensive from breeders running from $1000 up to $2500 but that price is in Canadian because all the ones that I have met are from Canadian breeders, I also think it depends on the blood lines and stuff like that.

    Hope that helped.
    Goonies never say die!

Thanks Amy for the great sig!

I do know that they have a very delicate bone structure, so you have to be very very careful with them around small children, as a too-enthusiastic "hug" can actually break a bone.

Karen, do you remember Sophie's Daddy from way back, owner of the papillon?? I think I'll do a search now and see if I can jot off an e-mail to him and see what he has to say. He was so proud of that little girl and rightfully so! Let's see how good I am at 'search.' hehe!
