    Not eating

Oscar is still not eating on his own I'm still having to syringe feed him his special soup(moist food, baby food, pedialite). He's not getting worse, but he's not getting any better He drinks water on his own, and he's still peeing well; he's just not eating on his own. I even boiled him a chicken breast and shredded it. He sniffed it and promptly curled back up into his little ball to go to sleep. Anybody have any ideas on how to help him to eat on his own? If he's still not eating on his own by Monday, I'm going to take him back to the vet. Thank you all, for your support and help.

I don't know whether you have it over there but we have a product called metatone tonic. It's basically a blend of vitamins and minerals meant as a pick me up for people who have lost their appetite after illness or whatever but it works well for dogs and such too. My sister told me about it because it is well known among guinea pig breeders to use this if a piggy goes off their food. She uses it on her piggies and it always gets them eating again.
I've used it on my dogs if they are a bit off colour, say if the weather is really hot and they are turning their nose up at too many meals to feel comfortable. It always gets them eating again.

I take it he has been ill but I haven't read anything so I'm a but clueless here.

It's a good idea to go back to the vets if he doesn't start eating again by tomorrow. It's good that he's still drinking though, at least he's still getting fluids.

If you can find anything like metatone tonic, it's worth trying it. There isn't anything in it that would hurt a dog and it just provides them with some nutrients whilst they aren't eating and helps them feel better.

Oscar has congestive heart failure; and sometime during the regular administration of his medicine and swithching his food over, he decided to stop eating on his own. Thank you for the suggestion of the tonic. I've never seen it here, but it reminded me of something else to try on him. We used to keep Pet Tinic around, but couldn't find it for a long time. I did a search and found where I can get some. It is a liquid vitamin supplement just for pets. It was the only time our pets liked to see a syringe coming So, maybe that will help him. Again, thank you.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if they sold metatone in the States. I'd never hard of it until my sister told me to get some mind.

You just buy it from normal chemists and such over here. People I know who've tried it also swear by it.

Oscar died this morning. His heart gave out. I was going to take him to the vet today, but God decided to take him home. He is now king of the rawhide plains at the rainbow bridge. Thank you for all of your support during his illness.

    Aw, I'm really sorry.

His lack of appetite was probably down to the fact that he knew his number was up so he was allowing himself to go. Dogs are often smart like that.

Having lost one of my own dogs at the end of January, I really do feel for you. I still cry about our Mist often.

Oh no. I'm so sorry. You did everything you could for Oscar. I think he knew it was his time & that's why he wouldn't eat. Hugs to you. Please take care.

Oscar, please say hi to my Maxie when you get to the Rainbow Bridge. He'll show you around & introduce you to all the other animals.
I love Fenway, JoJo, Olivia and Nonnie!
