i need more info on this...er...breed

i know it's not a pruebred and i in no way enjoy the fact that people are crossing poodles with other dogs and calling them "breeds" but i have found a cross on petfinder that i like and want to know more about. dachshund/poodle cross aka doxiepoo.

does anyone have one? does anyone know anything about them....pics would be great too.

Well, My Gracie is a cross...half yorkshire terrier and half poodle. I was looking for a purebred yorkie...but fell in love with her. I don't have anything against cross breeding..I read up as much as I could on yorkiepoos before getting her, visited her 3 times that week before making the decision..because she was $400, and I knew I could get an AKC for $500 (there were 2 available) but I couldn't let go of her.
I know she is not as "pretty" as a yorkie...but she is beautiful to me..and she is extremely smart. She is 5 months old today...can sit, lay down and speak on command. She will go get anything you throw and bring back to you. She doesn't have more than one accident per week..she car rides beautifully, is on best behavior when we go to Petsmart, she always gets to pick out a toy...so I think we made the perfect choice.

And I would also like to say that I knew absolutely nothing about Rescue sites, puppy mills or anything of that nature before Gracie..and now since I am on 4 pet forums, I have learned so much. If I knew then what I knew now I would have looked for my baby a whole different way, but then I would have missed out on Gracie. I did get her thru a pet shop...she was there on "consignment"...and knowing what I know now I know that is not usually the way to go...HOWEVER..I have "met" the person (thru email) who had her on consignment..it was her first time and she wants to keep up with Gracie so I send her pics every time I take one thru email. She is moving within 10 minutes of me this week (buying a house) and so we will meet in person. She loves the fact that Gracie is so well loved. She doesn't plan on having more puppies..she only sold them thru the pet shop because she didn't know any other way and for her it was a good experience..but she doesn't want to do it again because its too hard to part with the puppies..

Anywho, I am glad I got a "cross" ...I feel like in this case, I got the best of both "breeds"...but to me she is my baby, not a breed, anyway..lol.

What a sweetie! I can see the poodle and I can also see the doxie in her. I am also glad to see that the picture came from Petfinder and not a "breeder's" website.

I am definitely not an advocate of the new so-called breeds. I personally feel that if one wants a mixed breed just go to your nearest shelter. There are so many mixes there just waiting for forever homes. I get so angry when I see ads in the paper for some of these mixes and the hype with which they are advertised. Recently my local paper ran an ad from a "breeder" for a standard poodle/golden cross. Right now I forget what it was called, maybe a Golden Poodle or a Doodle? Anyway, they were boasting of this terrific new breed that is all the latest rage. Oh, and the asking price was around $800-$900 (the females were more in case someone was interested in furthering this "breed" for their own profit).

These breeders have only one thing in mind and that is their pocketbook. Most, if not all, have no idea what the breed standard is for the two breeds they are playing around with and manipulating and I doubt that they even give a thought to the health issues that may be prevalent with each of the breeds they are attempting to make money from.

GraciesMommy, your yorkiepoo is just precious. I have admired her picture many times. Yorkies and poodle are way up at the top of my "favorites list" which is ever growing. The thing that I don't agree with is that you were charged $400 for her. When people pay these high prices for mixes they are just encouraging this type of breeding to continue. Please don't think I am coming down hard on you. I am not and I love little Gracie. I just have a problem with someone doing this type of breeding with the shelters already full.

GraciesMommy, I feel I can't leave this thread without trying to better explain myself. I certainly don't want you to misunderstand and think that I am in any way criticising you or Gracie. Years ago I got my first poodle (a toy) from a pet shop. I knew nothing about puppy mills and only fairly recently now have I come to realize that since her "breeder" was listed as in the mid-west (I bought her in Pennsylvania) which is known for a large amount of puppy mills have I made the assumption that she was a puppy mill dog.

Of course I loved her with all of my heart and she was as smart as a whip and a beauty as well. In fact, I fell in love with the breed as a result of having her. Since she was "already born" she needed a home and I provided it. What I am trying to say is that we need to stop having these puppies "already born" and in need of a home. The only way we can stop that is by not encouraging this breeding.

A great many of these mixes use poodles for their mixing. It is no surprise to me because they are an excellent breed, although I am definitely a little biased. I would prefer, though, for people who are interested in a poodle, or any purebred dog for that matter, to use a reputable breeder. My third poodle came from such a breeder. She showed her dogs all over the country and, in fact, my Ashley (one of her dogs) had an uncle that was in a movie. These people know what they are doing and can ensure that healthy qualities are bred in and undesirable traits do not get bred at all. People mixing up two breeds do not know enough about either of these breeds to make any guarantees at all and the fact that they charge such large amounts just gets to me because it is a "money thing" pure and simple. Hope that clears this up a little.

I have never heard of this so called "breed" before, it is adorable though. It really annoys me that so many people are breeding different dogs with poodles all the time though. I personally like the looks of a pure doxie though. I'm sure she has a great personality Doxies are VERY outgoing, active dogs usually (the ones I have met and owned are) and from what I've heard poodles are very sweet dogs too.

I know so much more now...didn't have a clue before I got her..I am glad I have her tho, wouldn't want to be without her, but yep, I could have gotten a baby that needed a good home..at a rescue site or shelter...for less than $100 and would have loved them too, but its too late now, I love my Gracie..

According to Cheryl, the one who sold her on consignment, she is not going to do it again. The experience with the shop was fine, it was the parting with puppies..she doesn't want to go thru it again. She says the $ was not worth it. There were 2 puppies in the litter, so she made $800 and I am sure the pet store got a good chunk. Plus she paid 1st shots...so minus that...and she doesn't want to put her toy poodle thru another pregnancy..she said its just too much worrying.

Bottom line is...I love Gracie...no matter what she is..and am glad I have her..BUT if I had to do it over again...no, I would have gone to a shelter and started from there...and fallen in love with mutt..but too late now~~~~~~~~

GraciesMommy I am so glad that you are not upset with me. I wasn't trying to criticize you or precious little Gracie at all and I am glad you know that. My Peaches, who came from the puppy mill, was just as precious as could be. She was healthy and lived into her teens so I was fortunate indeed! I would love to hear and see more about Gracie as I am certainly smitten with her from afar!

My Bella came from a breeder and when I wanted to add another dog to our family I was constantly on Petfinder. All of the poodles I ran across were either in poor health or seniors. Since my hubby had to be in agreement with me on this I dared not approach him with the idea of a sick or elderly dog. Then one day I happened to be at a shelter with my daughter for a completely different reason and went through the kennel area on a whim. Amazingly, there was my Ripley! He had been brought in the night before as a stray. After a one week wait (to see if he was claimed) he was mine. Sometimes things just have a way of falling into place.

Anyway, thanks for listening to me. I do tend to run off in the mouth at times! LOL!

Pam, the dog is not in Nashville. it's in Indianapolis,Indiana. i visit indiana all the time and was hopeing to return with him/her (there are two of them.brother and sister) one of those visits.

my parents are open to a second dog as long as THEY like it.grrr. i don't know why though. i'm the primary care giver. i pay for everything,and i'm home all day so the dog is with me more then anyone. oh well....i
m gonna start a topic about goldendoodles because my parents seem very intrested in them.
