Thread: Colonoscopy Results - SIDE EFFECTS NOT GOOD

  1. #16
I was on it for neuropathy but I gained weight and fast on it, so I quit taking it. It didn't help w/the neuropathy anyhow. There are side effects w/every drug so I wouldn't worry too much about that. Just do your research and perhaps give it a trial run before you decide anything.

Thanks everyone for your input, comments, experiences. I took it last night. Didn't find it helped with my sleep. I was up many times thru the night. I didnt' find any relief for the IBS yet either, but I know, must be patient. All I can say is right now my head feels clear for the first time in months. If it does nothing else but relieve the stress of the divorce I will be happy.

Don't give up too quickly. A lot of these drugs gradually build up a therapeutic level, then the amount in your system levels off. I hope that it works out for you!

Good point. This drug takes about 3 weeks to reach full effectiveness.

May i ask why it was prescribed for IBS, this is news to me, it is often prescribed for fibromyalgia, in low doses and of course depression but i have never heard of it for IBS, what is it supposed to achieve, did the doctor explain that to you, i am very curious, being a sufferer myself, i just cannot figure out the necessity for it, hope you don't mind me asking.

Carole go to Google and enter "amitriptyline IBS" , and I think you will get a ton
of information on why her doctor prescribed amitriptyline.

cheers will do thanks, funny it was never ever mentioned to me by my doctors, perhaps they prescribed it for my fibro, and as IBS goes hand in hand with it, never told me it was to help that as well, you learn something new every day don't you?

Apparently the nerves in your brain are the same as the ones in your intestines. The amitriptyline is supposed to help soothe the nerves in the intestines, etc. that should settle down the IBS. At least that's how he explained it to me.

Ok. The amitriptyline is working and making my IBS issues way better. BUT a new problem has cropped up. After a BM, inside of about 30 seconds, I get horrible cramps, so bad that they have actually made me throw up, they last about 30 minutes.

    Anyone had this happen??

No. This is what I have happen BEFORE - not after!

My scope is in 2 weeks. Maybe I'll get answers then.........

Hope your doc can shed some light on this for you.

Talked to the Dr's assistant. She will discuss with him and call me tomorrow morning. Might just need a different dosage. I am not to take the pill tonight. I'm glad she said that because I was thinking it would be really hard to swallow it tonight.

I was on it for migraines and neuropathic nerve pain years ago and I have to say it worked wonders. But after a few months on it I felt always felt groggy and started gaining too much weight . My mouth was always dry, something I hated and all my food tasted like metal so my doc took me off, he didn't like the side effects. They have a lot of newer drugs easier on the system now. Have you tried a simple benzo for your IBS? I know quite a few people that take them and they find it really helps.

I have a prescription for 25mg Amitryptyline. I have the Rx because of my migraines and the depression that goes with having daily migraines for 2+ years. (Going on 3 years now... *sigh*)

The pills are helpful but leave me SO tired.

The first time I took it, I slept for 3 days... literally only getting up to use the facilities and going back to bed! They don't have that same powerful effect anymore though!

Well, I didn't take the pill last night. No cramping or throwing up this morning. We will see what the assistant has to say later this morning.
