Text of statement by Tiger Woods

By The Associated Press 4 hours, 44 minutes ago

This is a transcript of the statement released Friday night by golfer Tiger Woods on his Web site. It ran with the headline “Tiger Woods taking hiatus from golf.”

I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I’ve done, but I want to do my best to try.

I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding. What’s most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.

After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

What I would like to know is, why are people saying that Tiger's absence is going to be harmful to professional golf? Wouldn't that be a good thing, because now other players will get the attention at the major tournaments that would otherwise have gone to Tiger? I am confused.(yes, again!)

No, not necessarily. People like to follow the stars, and when there's no one big, charismatic name to focus on, golf isn't exactly a draw. How many of the other top golfers could you identify in a photo line-up? Other player will win the money, but it takes that extra step to become a star, and a willingness to face cameras, and speak publicly, and look good while doing so.

I don't really watch golf but even I can name and pick out of a line up the other top golfers. I don't think his absence is going to be horrific for golf.

TV ratings went into the tank for golf when Tiger was off following his surgery. Check out this article from 2007.

yeah ratings will probably drop but its not going to end golf or anything. They did it before Tiger and they will continue to go on without him until the next flashy superstar comes along.

They will take a hit but it's not going to be disasterous.

I don't know about you, but I only watch two of the big events each year. The Masters - for the splendid scenery, and the British Open.
