Why have Americans chosen to use the phrase "how Come" when "why" conveys the same question?

I don't see anything wrong with using "How come" ... after all, one would also have to use another word with "Why" like "why do ..." in many instances.

You look for the XXXXXXX in the pantry, do not find it.
You go to the store, buy another.
You come home to put your new XXXXXXX, move a can/jar and there is the old XXXXXXXX?

Richard's been watching me. I have several XXXX in the cupboard now.

Why do people e-mail when a phone call would be better? I have a couple of business people who send me e-mails to ask questions (like what the mailing address is, did I send their report, etc.) when they can call our 800 line for a quicker answer.

Email gave us phonaphobes an easy way out. . .I hate to make phone calls and will often email when a call would actually be easier. I have try to overcome it but the phone makes me very nervous. I've gotten much better as I get older but there are times when I just can't face picking up the phone. . .

Yes, I don't get that either. A friend of mine wasn't receiving my replies to her email for some reason so rather than call me to see what was up, she emailed several of our mutual friends to ask if they'd heard from me and if I was alright. To complicate matters, those friends in turn emailed me! Why she/they couldn't pick up the phone and call me is ridiculous, especially if they thought there might be a problem!
