At the risk of sounding like a total nerd...

I loved Kate Mulgrew as Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek Voyager. She did a very good job at making the character convincing. Her acting really helped me get into the show a lot more than other Star Trek series (No I'm not sparking a what captian is better debate )
Another convincing role that comes to mind is the lead female role in the first (the VERY first) Night of the Living dead movie. She really had you going that she was in fact, the dumbest woman on earth.

Seven Years in Tibet with Brad Pit. That's a really good movie. I was surprised I liked it because I don't usually go for those type movies.

I did the right thing by setting you free
But the pain is very deep.
If only I could turn back time, forever, you I'd keep.
    I miss you

I hear you whimper in your sleep
I gently pet you and say, no bad dreams
It will be alright, to my dog as dark as night.

John Lithgow in the World According to Garp.
He played a transexual football player named Roberta Muldoon.
And as Emiliano Lizardo in Buckaroo Banzai-that was a real dumb, but funny movie!

Oh, I agree 100%! He was absolutely great for the part.

And I'm sure you'll know what I'm gonna say...

Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. Seriously, if it weren't for him acting as the total jack a$$ pirate I probably wouldn't like the movie as much as I do. He plays the part so well, and I don't know, the character seems so much like me. Yes, I am admitting I'm a jack a$$

I also like Reese Witherspoon in Sweet home Alabama. There's not really a particular reason, but she just plays the part good.

    Ricardo Montalban as Khan

    Harrison Ford as Han Solo

    ALan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce

George C. Scott as Patton (He was better as Patton than Patton was as himself, in reality George sounded like a whiny kid)

Donald Sutherland in "Kelly's Heroes" (Okay, the entire cast of Kelly's Heroes, but the best line in the movie is "Always with the negative vibes, Moriarty, always with the negative vibes!")

John Wayne as Donovan in "The Fighting Seebees"

John Belushi and Dan Akroyd in "The Blues Brothers"
