Dr. Sage called this morning. He gave me the good news first, her temperature has dropped a degree and she still has good color and alertness. Then he dropped the bomb, her liver enzymes are highly elevated...ALT and AST and an elevated bilirubin. Her white blood cell counts are elevated. I asked him how high the liver enzymes were, and he said not to panic but they were greater than 2000. Then he went on to say this cause could be the bacterial infection could be in her blood stream or a chronic active hepitisis or a problem that cocker spaniels get which has something to do with copper metabolism. He has added another antibiotic and he is going to try to give her some water today to see how she handles it. As far as visiting goes, we could, but he thought is might be stressful for her when we left so he advised against it. The next thing he wants to do is an ultra sound of the liver. He will call to let me know how she does today. I guess part of obtaining an diagnosis is going to be how she responds over the next couple days. Needless to say, I am just numb.
