    Diabetes

Well, a few of you know that my cat Wobble has diabetes and we only found out last week. His blood sugar levels were 28.9 and it should be only 8, also his glucose levels are exceptionally high. First of all, I was told he would be in at the vets for the day, then it was overnight, and now its into next week!
I phoned today to see how he was and they said his levels have been unusually fluctuating but then went on to say that it was expected. His level at that time had dropped from the 28.9 right down to 3.1 !!!
Does anybody else have a diabetic cat? and if so, approx how long did it take to get the blood sugar and glucose levels back to normal?
Am really worried now, both for his health and the fact that the poor sod has been in 2 rescue homes, come to me and is now dumped in a vets cage ! I desperately want him back at home but would love some idea as to how long I can expect this to go on as our vets seem to change their story every 5 minutes!

I'm no help for your kitty, but I did have a dog that had diabetes.

Once the insulin dose is determined, it can be fairly routine to control. Bear lived for 5 years with diabetes. His diet was controlled by type and amount and he got 2 shots a day, 12 hours apart. I understand that cats can be controlled with one shot a day, but dogs cannot.

There is a diabetes board for pets that may help you. Try:

Read the posts, even if they seem old. The information is still relevant.

My mothers cat had diabetes, at first it was hard to get the dosage right for her, but once the vets got that sorted, she had her daily insulin injection and was fine, I have heard you can get a pill for them nowadays, but I am not certain on that.

I am sure kitty will do just fine, good luck.

Some diabetic cats may be able to be controlled with a pill. You might ask your vet about that. Good luck with the kitty!

    home now

Hi all, thank you for the posts. Wobs is home now until tuesday and is on a special science diet (DM - diabetes maintenance) along with 2 shots of 4ml insulin a day.
Cat protection League were contacted by our vet and they have arranged that they will pay for any treatment, both now and in the future as he came from them. Phew!!! Can't say how much of a relief that was to hear.
Tuesday will be another day of blood tests to see how he is coping with that amount of insulin and to see if they need to up or lower the dosage.
He seems pleased to be home - ate his breakfast, licked a few peoples feet then went off up to bed! same old!
Will keep u all posted....thanks again!
