viral papilloma

I just now opened my dog's mouth only to find a few nasty sponge like looking things growing on the inside of her lips/mouth. They look like warts, but uglier. I looked them up on the internet and will address the problem with the vet. I did see a few solutions to them via different forums. Has anyone else dealt with this issue? I am not tooooo worried, and surely hope they die off on their own.

Here's my other problem. Do I tell the doggie day care that she has them? It seems to me it would be a good thing to do. I have no idea where or when she caught the virus. The virus sounds common with immature dogs.

Any suggestions?

I'd tell the doggie daycare just in case, so they can check other visitors!

I would tell them if there is a chance the other dogs could become
infected. I wouldn't think this was a very likely thing, but don't know
for sure. Your Vet would know. I'd follow his/her advice.

I called the vet first and made an appointment for this coming Thursday and then hit the send key to send a message to the doggie day care persons. I am not worried but gee, I think they should know that I don't want my dog infecting any more than she may have already done...... and who knows how she got the virus.

I don't know what made me look in her mouth but I am glad I did. It's amazing what mouths of pets can tell you. Now, to get any one of cats to let me open their mouths! Actually, Lucy, the black barn cat is going to the vet with Prue, the dog, for her annual check up at which time the vet will pry open her mouth and check her teeth and tongue. Chloe, another kitty of mine is due for her bi-annual check in April. Now she is a cat that has issues with someone looking in her mouth. My vet always manages it, somehow. I think the cats just give up when they sense they have a team of folks in the same room and they are on a table in a strange place.

Boy, pets can be like children. Daycare, doctor visits....... thank goodness, no college!

Cincy had that issue when she was a baby...she had cherry eye and surgery for it at about 4 months, and the vet throught is was because of the stress on her immune system. They went away over time and Sadie never got it. I would think if another dog had a comprimised immune system th maybe would catch it from her, but in general, probally not. Tomorrow, I will go back and look and see if I can find any threads about it, but it would have been early in 2002.

Well, the vet seemed hardly impressed by Prue's viral warts. The two big ones that were there when I made the appointment, had dissolved on their own and two little ones were left to be inspected. The vet said that what Prue had is like a child with a cold, but much less symptom oriented. She said to send Prue back to doggie day care.

Prue now weighs 21.8 pounds! She was 15 pounds when she was spayed at seven months. Prue will be 1 on February 7th. Now I must keep track of her weight, so that she doesn't get too big. She hardly eats and often leaves food in her dish. She does like people food and that is where she must be monitored. Guess who's fault that is............. I don't give her much, but it doesn't take much.

Lucy weighed in at 11 pounds, which is good. Her teeth are great etc. She did pee in the container on the way to the vet, which was a first for her. I guess she hadn't peed in awhile when I whipped her off the bed and into the container. Cats aren't like dogs, when it comes to going potty. You just have to hope your cat has used the litter lately before you take them off to the vet.

Prue and Lucy, both, were such a good girls at the vet. They both behaved nicely and let Millie, the vet, look them over. Lucy got one shot. Prue did a couple of tricks for her treats. Lucy just got a clean, dry towel for the bottom of her crate!

All, in all, I am not going to worry about the warts. I trust my vet and since Prue doesn't seem to be bothered by any of the warts, I am going to let it ride, too.

I did read all about this on the internet and was scared silly. I should have waited to talk to the vet, but hey, waiting days is exhausting, so the alternative is the internet.

Thanks for the memories Amy. I enjoyed reading the old thread. Hard to
believe so much time has gone by.

SAS, Glad Prue didn't miss out on any of her Day School. She is sure
a lucky pup to be able to have regular play dates.
