From what I have read, koalas do not make good pets, they really are wild animals, and live on a very limited kind of food - just Eucalyptus leaves. They are also nocturnal, need to live with other Koalas, and have a fairly large "home range."
Koalas cannot be pets. I watched a show in which a koala was stolen from the zoo once. Aparently it almost died of starvation within a few days. They need on a few species of plants. They can't sleep laying down, thye must be in a tree, and they can't drink from a bowl or cup. This koala that was stolen lost 10% of its body weight each day from stress and lack of food, sleep, and proper temperature. They must sleep about 20 hours a day. They are also very aggressive as adults. I'd suggest you buy a pet that's meant to be a domestic animal, leave wild animals to where they belong and where they can thrive.

Aren't they endangered anyways, therefore illegal to own as pets?
Or can you own an endangered species?

Regardless of whether they're endangered or make good pets, animals that are native to your area are illegal to own as pets unless you obtain a license and pay a fee. Even pets as common as Red Eared Sliders are, yes, illegal in MY area in Missouri because they are native to the lakes and rivers!
So that having been said, I've heard they don't make very good pets at all. Even if they did sell some as pets (and I'm sure they do somewhere, if not legally than illegally) then they won't be near as domesticated as you would want for them to be and you could quite possibly end up getting yourself hurt.
Oh I agree. Even if they are native, endangered, illegal, ANY & ALL wild animals should be just that, wild NOT PETS!
But am still wondering if it is at all possible to own an endangered species legally?
I would imagine you'd have to have some sort of permit, but do you also have to be part of a wild life rehab or refuge or zoo or the like?
I did a few quick searches when I get a few spare minutes & can't find the answer yet.

lv4dogs I imagine you would be able to have one as a "pet" but you would have to have it at a wildlife sanctuary or something of the sort. I can't imagine the state or government actually letting you keep one in your own house.
