bone aggression

my 1 year old has bone aggression. if you try and take her bone away she growls than snaps at you. how can i make her stop biting when she has her bone?

my dog has the same problem, first of all when she does that you need to grap her musle (nose) and say no, and also before i really help you i have a question, do you give her the bone and take it away when its pretty much chewed up??? or have her chew on it for like a hour

well i have to give her a special bone to keep her teeth clean, because she has teeth problems. its not really a bone, its kinda like beef jerky. its the kind of bone that she eats. i have to take it away sometimes, when it's time to groom her, or put her in the kennel, or something like that.

hm... you might want to call a behaviorist for this! If your dog is snapping at you and guarding her resources from you, there's probably at least a FEW additional problems, like dominance, food aggression, etc. I would NOT grab her muzzle or 'alpha-role' her, because that could leave you with a nice bite and an even more posessive and resentful dog.

Until then, if you have to give her the treats, feed her in her crate so she doesn't bite anyone. Can you rip it into little pieces? If so, hand feed it to her.

Have you taught her "Drop it"? Ours have all been taught to drop whatever they have on command. In case one of us ever needs what they have, we need them to know a command that will allow us to safely have it. What would you do if she was guarding something that was hazardous to her health instead of the bone?

yeah so true becki especially if she got a hold of choclate maybe you can take her to a basic obedience class they learn so much in it, and you do learn drop it in that class, and many more, especially to help her with the agression

i have taught her to drop it. a bone is the only think she won't drop. if she had chocolate or something hazerdous, she wont gaurd it or be aggresive. its only bones that she has a prob. with.
