If it is fleas then I would suggest getting a proper treatment (such as Frontline) which will get rid of them and keep him flee-free. If his bottom is the cause of the irritation it could be worms - either way I think a trip to the vet might help just to make sure he isn't suffering from something than can easily be cleared up

A flea bath probably won't work, or at least for long. A good reputable flea treatment would be a lot better, like frontline, advantage or revolution.

But it may not be fleas, it could be an allergy of some sort, a habit, or many other things.

Does his skin look irritated or abnormal in any way?
Does he chew in a certain area?

He chews everywhere and when we give him bathes we use flea shampoo but I dont think it works but we also have this little bottle of stuff that goes on him once a month to help fleas.

Do you know what the once a month treatment is called?

First get rid of the fleas. Consult your vet because if the irritation is from the fleas, then the vet can give you medicine to help with the itchies.

If the problem persists when the dog does not have fleas then it is possibly an allergy. My Dusty has allergies and he chews his fur whenever he is in a flair up. Flea control and other topicals irritate his skin so he only gets them if necessary. Fortunately he has not had fleas so eliminating the flea products hasn't been a big headache for us (yet). He does get brewers yeast which I believe helps prevent fleas naturally.

Your best source of help is your vet.

Your dog could also be allergic to flea saliva. I'd suggest you visit your vet if you haven't already done so.
