Gidget seems to be doing better and acting more like herself. She used the potty normally yesterday afternoon. I just wonder... The vet said these are very common and that there really isn't any medication that can be given. Seems odd to me, but never had any experience with this. Hopefully I won't again. The only thing they suggested was Sub-Q fluids under the skin, but since she is eating and drinking said it wasn't necessary. Said we could take her to our regular vet to try and do a urinalysis, but even if there is enough urine she said these tests don't usually determine much and that it is very common in female cats. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

By the way, everything else they checked seemed normal and she had no fever.

I'm happy to read that Gidget is feeling better, but disagree with the vet not giving her any antibiotics to help clear the infection. I've had a few rescues come through here (along with their new babies) and they contracted horrible UTIs probably from giving birth in filthy spots outside. One in mind was Crumpet who had a severe UTI to the point she was dribbling nothing but blood. A few weeks of Clavamox and things cleared up nicely for her, but it sure put her in a foul mood! Hopefully Gidget will keep urinating with no problems, but if she starts up with the multiple potty trips, I'd insist on antibiotics. I agree that humans and animals are over medicated, but it can progress to a serious infection if not treated properly.

I'm with Jan, what kind of vet is it that doesn't know of anything to be given for a UTI? Antibiotics are the normal prescribed medication and usually work quite quickly and should totally eliminate the UTI if all of them are given as prescribed.

Like Jan said, when Tubby had a UTI he was dribbling and left a nice bloody urine spot on the Vet's counter as evidence. UTI's are quite painful and are treatable so if you notice Gidget "acting up" again, take her immediately to a different vet than this last one and I'm almost positive you will get a completely different story.

I am an over protective Mommy to begin with, I drive my husband crazy. Anyway, I got to thinking about it and called my regular vet (yesterday was the emergency vet) and they reviewed what they had faxed over and agreed that it wouldn't hurt for her to have meds. So they are putting them up for me and I'll pick them up on my way home from work. Since she seems to be doing better should I hold off on the meds or give them as a precaution anyway. I posted in another thread where I had found a site on line that stated "Some animals are treated with antibiotics, this is not recommended unless there is microscopic or bacteriologic evidence of infection. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics may cause resistant bacterial organisms to proliferate". So, I am torn as to what to do. I don't want to cause a problem, but certainly don't want to over look one. What do you think?

I would give them to her. I can't see as how giving her antibiotics for 10 days (or so) will "cause resistant bacterial organisms to proliferate." I could see if she was constantly on antibiotics, but one 10-day treatment isn't going to hurt anything, and it will more than likely help.

I agree with Debbie...I'd give them to her. It's people who use antibiotics for even a slight runny eye that cause cats to become resistant to antibiotics. I doubt Gidget's been on them constantly (in which case they probably wouldn't work) and it would prevent the UTI from progressing to a major infection.

Thank you for the advice, it is appreciated. Gidget doesn't normally take any antibiotics except Clindamycin, which they all take every few months for gingivitis. In fact she just finished up this morning on her 10 day, but they are unrelated antibiotics and the Clindamycin is certainly not going to help the UTI. Now of course I have caused myself more concern. Do you think the back to back meds may cause a problem? She's only been on them for 10 days and the last time she had it was I think actually 6 months ago as her gums have been doing better. Sorry to be a bother, but I just want to do what is best. In fact with the Clindamycin they have had me do up to 14 days, so I am thinking the new med shouldn't hurt her.
