Student Suspended Over Call From Mom In Iraq..

A teen at a Georgia high school is punished for defying district code. 'I was right by not hanging up my phone,' he said.

By Jenny Jarvie, Times Staff Writer

ATLANTA — A high school junior in a central Georgia military town was suspended from school this week after refusing to end a long-distance cellphone call from his mother, an Army sergeant serving in Iraq.

Kevin Francois, a 17-year-old student at Spencer High School in Columbus, Ga., was in the school cafeteria Wednesday when his mother, Sgt. 1st Class Monique Bates, called to check in with him. When Francois went outside to get better reception, he was spotted by a teacher who — citing a district policy against cellphone use during school hours — told him to hang up.

Francois refused and was suspended for 10 days for disorderly conduct.

"I think I was right by not hanging up my phone," Francois said in a phone interview Friday.

The teen said he looked forward to the monthly call from his mother, who left in January for a one-year tour with the 203rd Forward Support Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division.

"It means a lot to me," he said. "Between times she's not calling me, I'm considering if she's safe. When I hear from her, it makes my day better."

School district officials said that Francois initially did not tell the teacher he was speaking with his mother in Iraq and that he cursed when he was instructed to hang up the phone.

"The teacher escorted the young man to the office, where assistant principals tried to get him to calm himself and to cease the use of profanity," Muscogee County School Supt. John A. Phillips Jr. said in a statement released Friday. "It was only at this point that administrators learned he was talking to his mother in Iraq."

Francois says he immediately told the teacher he was speaking to his mother.

"I told her in a calm voice: 'I'm on the phone with my mom in Iraq. I'm not going to give you the phone.' "

Francois said he did become frustrated when the teacher snatched his phone away. "I got some attitude," he said. "But I didn't curse. I just couldn't understand why I couldn't talk to her. I kept pleading and pleading."

The school set Francois' suspension at 10 days after exhibiting "defiance and profanity" in an administrator's office, Phillips said.

District policy allows students to have cellphones on campus, but they may not be used during school hours. The rule was designed "to preserve instructional time and decorum in our schools," Phillips said.

Michelle Joyner of the National Military Family Assn., a private nonprofit support group for military families, said Friday that any communication with a family member deployed in Iraq should be approached sensitively.

"Kids do need that contact," Joyner said. "Just to hear and say hello and be able to know that your loved one is safe. It's also important for the parent to continue to have parental involvement and know how their kid is doing."

Francois is scheduled to meet with school administrators Monday. His suspension may be reduced to three days so that he can take his final exams. More than 3,700 students from military families are enrolled in the Muscogee district.

Francois said his mother did not find out about his suspension until he e-mailed her an article from the local newspaper Friday.

    "She was mad," he said.

Yes, it is a bit sad, but if he did start cursing at the teacher then he deserved the punishment.

    "I got some attitude"

Lovely, a 17 year old who can't follow the rules and can't speak.

    Tough cookies, suspend him.

And to think that his mother was mad that he was suspended, when she HAS to follow orders and rules.

    Simply fricking amazing.

I read an update on Yahoo, it said that his suspension was lowered to 3 days and that he got the suspension because he swore at the teacher and that he has a history of bad behavior

I do feel however, it could have been handled a lot better.

If I get a phone call from someone I know in Iraq, I'm not hanging up. Period. You never know if that's going to be your last contact with them. Zero Tolerance rules are ridiculous.

"The teen said he looked forward to the monthly call.."

only one call a month? Shame on that school, and especially shame on that bitch of a teacher. I'm so glad I was homeschooled my highschool years. I believe he didn't curse. Schools use the "cursing" excuse way too much after punishing an innocent student.

i agree with lady's human and lkpike... if I get a call from someone over fighting and in harms way, I WILL answer it, rules or no rules.

    1. it was during a break from classes
    2. it was during lunch
    3. it was while he wasn't worried bout schoolwork.

    4. his mom might not come back!

#4 is the most important frankly. she might not come back, she might not make it to the next monthly call.

you are darned tootin that I'll answer that call and cop an attitude towards whoever would tell me to hang up.

I understand the feelings about this kid getting his phone call.

Yes, there may not be a followup call.

But, "gotting some attitude" especially with a teacher wasn't the right thing to do.

I would love to see how many other kids get a phone call from "over seas" during class from now on.

    "Johnny, put the phone away!"

"EFF YOU, it's my ------ in Iraq"

"So what time will I meet you after school?"

I'm with everyone who thinks the kid should of talked to his mother. He may never hear from her or see her again. The teacher should not have crab the phone from. Especially after she/he knew who he was talking to. Sorry I think the school was wrong on this one.

If the teacher or school would have handled this better from the start, the situation would have become as big as it is. What would have been an emotional call for the boy, was escalated by the reactions of the teacher.

If you were that boy wouldnt YOU want to talk to your mom?

I know that I would never hang up, what if that was his last time he ever heard from her

The day I walked out of my dad's hosipital room that was the last time I ever talked to him.

Six months later I walked out of my girlfriend's hospital room and that was the last time I talked to her.

I "got an attitude" with god for a while after that.

Here's a little side note to the topic.

When my GF went home to the care of her family, I wasn't allowed to visit or speak to her............

I found out she passed away from a co-worker.

    Rules......

I'm gonna blow thru some red lights tomorrow...
