I took Nebo in to work with me today and gave him a bath, so I was with him all day. I came home and was taking some pictures of him when I noticed that one of his pupils in his eye was bigger than the other. I called the vet and they said to get him in right away so I rushed him there. In the car his eyes seemed to get even worse, one was extremely small compared to the other...as small as it would get in bright, direct sunlight, not the light inside a car in the evening.
I weighed him at the vet and he's lost 8 lbs since March 19 when he was last weighed...he's 51 lbs now and he was 59 lbs. I don't think that is related to this though it's because he wouldn't eat much dog food (ate lots of treats) while we were gone, he never will eat dog food away from home he does it every time...but that is still a significant weight loss. He had been eating at home just fine, he ate all his food last night and he's eating some right now.
Anyway, then the vet examined him. It was the eye that had the smaller pupil that was the problem, the other was dilating ok...that one was dilating much slower (he turned off the lights and put a flashlight to his eyes). He said it could either be the actual eye doing it or a neurological problem. He did a test to see if it was the actual eye (called it UV-itis I think?) causing it but the test showed it wasn't.
So that left it with it being a neurological problem...and apparently there are lots of different possibilities. He said it could be related to his tail being hurt (his tail seems much better now, he was almost holding it up all the way today)...like his back being injured and sending a nerve signal causing the eye to react that way. He had a name for the disorder but I can't remember it. It could also be caused by some sort of insect bite...something carried by fleas and ticks....that I guess they have in the florida area but not here that can cause neurological damage. I think he said some other possibilities too but I was too upset to really take it all in after what he said last. He said that it's possible there could be a brain tumor causing it but he said it was not likely considering his age (almost 3) and no other symptoms...but just saying that about gave me a heart attack.
He took a blood sample that would test the insect thing but I won't know until Monday. He gave me some prednisone to give him (very small dose) for now.
Now his pupils look fine, they are both the same size.....but the one that had the smaller pupil is now swollen in the corner. And ever since we got home I noticed he's been scratching at his nose. I'm wondering if he could have been stung or bitten by an insect (spider?) here? I don't know if that could cause the pupil thing, but I think that can affect the nerves which could affect the eye.....
I don't know, I just know I'm really upset and worried about him. He's my baby, I just don't know what I would do if something happened to him. I would really appreciate some prayers for him, I really hope it is not something serious. Thank you.
