Ex-discus champ saves OAP

A former discus champion policeman saved a pensioner from drowning when he tossed him a life belt from 50ft away.

The man, 68, had gone through the ice on a frozen pond in Berlin and was trapped in the freezing water.

A number of policemen tried to throw him the life belt but without success until officer Andreas Bunkus arrived.

Bunkus, 38, had spent a decade training as a discus thrower and was able to aim the ring exactly at the pensioner, who caught it straight away.

"It's been years since I last threw a discus. I'm glad to see I've still got what it takes," said Bunkus.

The pensioner was taken to hospital where he was treated for severe hypothermia.
