    KNAWING

My male guinea pig constantly chews through the bars of his cage. He started doing this when we got a female GP (he did it before sometimes) Do any of you know the cause of this or how to prevent this?

    Thanx,
    Rachel

Cause: he smells that fine, young female piggy and he's just itchin to MEET her and make some little pigglets, being the little stud muffin that he is!

Prevention: Well, there are several things you could do but the 2 things that I find most realistic are either get a huge aquarium (piggies need their excersise so make sure the cage/aquarium is more then big enough so he'll he a happy guy), however, the hanging water bottle may become an issue...it's likely he'll learn that when he pounds it against the glass it gets your attention, and when he has your attention, he can get you to introduce him to the new girl piggy in town (or at least talk to and pet him, which is better then nothing )

The next, and more permenant fix is to prevent those raging piggy hormones from taking over that little piggy body by making an apointment with a vet to have the piggy castrated. Yes they can castrate guinea pigs, I have seen it done many times. So that's what I suggest. I have had guinea pigs, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE them, but they really can be noisy, especially when they WANT something! And you brought this new little "hottie" into his place so it's not surprising he's trying to get out of his bachlor pad to meet her.

Just my 2 cents worth. Hope this was helpful.
