Thread: The tiels' new blankey...

    The tiels' new blankey...

Its been VERY cold lately, and the tiels have been sleeping upstairs in my room, where its a lot warmer than downstairs. Recently I bought a new 'small' cage for them, because its much easier to have them sleep in that, than to carry their whole big cage upstairs. They had a cover for their big cage, but nothing for the small one, so I was basically using sheets to cover them at night, which were NOT warm. I put 3 sheets over them a couple of times because we usually keep the central heating low, and it was way too cold for them. Anyway, my mom and I decided to go to the fabric store to get some nice, warm fabric to make them a little cage cover with for the winter. We went to several stores, but they didn't have much, and what they DID have was outrageously expensive!

Several days ago, my mom went to Macy's to do some shopping and came back with a baby blanket. She thought it would make the perfect blanket for the tiels. What a great idea!

Last night, I sat down and measured the cage....then cut the blanket accordingly, and sewed it up. It fits perfectly, and I felt so good knowing the tiels were warm last night. I made it so its closed all around and buttons up in the front. My dad calls it their little hut. They love it! This morning, they didn't even want to get out of their 'bedroom cage'. I'm guessing they enjoyed the warmth and wanted to cuddle in there for awhile longer. Anyway, just thought I would share some pics of their new blanket. What do you all think?

    I know, I know...my tiels are spoiled........but that's a good thing, isn't it? He he he.

I am thinking of getting a small "travel" type cage to carry Bennie in. I have decided to start bringing him to work with me on some days when I will be in the office all day. I think it would be good for him to have some time away from the other birds and he could get more attention from me. I want Scott to build him a "gym" like Jessica has for Dawn that has a "tray" on the bottom. He loves to climb on the gym we have at home. I think it would be good for Bennie and hopefully help him become more sociable. Regardless of whether Bennie lives with me or Aly or Amber, I want him to be comfortable. I haven't spent enough time with him and his mom and dad are not nice to him usually.
So, after saying all of that, I will need one of those blankets too in order to keep Bennie warm as we come and go, Popcornbird!!! It is so CUTE!!! I had no idea you could sew like that.

My mom was telling me earlier that I should contact cage manufacturers and tell them I'll make cage covers for them that they can buy from me and sell to stores with the appropriate cages. I guess its something I can consider in the future....not now, as I'm too busy with school, but it might be something I'd like to do in the future, if I'm able to. People usually use towels or sheets to cover their birds at night, and I *think*, if they could have a cover that comes with the cage, they would probably prefer that. I *love* to sew. It has always been one of my 'hobbies'. I think Bennie would LOVE to go to work with you Logan! He would probably like a blanket too. Maybe you could get Helen to make him one. He he he! I would actually make you one if I could though...seriously.
