    Introducing Emily!

Well, the Helmstetler House has YET ANOTHER new addition - I don't think we can keep this up...

One of my husband's ham radio buddies was deer hunting over the weekend and saw this cat being mistreated by other hunters, so he went back today with a box and got her, and brought her to us. Tad, my husband, has been wanting a male cat since Pep died, but now he wants to keep her. We've decided to name her Emily. She is cute - I'm just unsure about how we can handle the expense of another animal, so soon after we got Nilla. And Nilla is still so wild and Emily is very small and timid. Nilla is sniffing under the bathroom door and crying (we have Emily in the bathroom, isolated).

Should I put Emily in a cat carrier so that the others can sniff her out? I've already had some hissing from Sasha.

    Here's pictures of Miss Emily...

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks! Tina

Emily is so pretty. Are you completely sure she is healthy and free of any contagious diseases? I'd take her to the vet first to make sure she's alright before letting the other cats be around her. Then, if that is all clear, I'd put her in a cat carrier so the others can get used to her, and she can get used to them as well.

She's beautiful!!! Kudos to hubby's friend for saving her, and to you for taking her in!

First things first - you have to get her to a vet to make sure she's healthy before you let anyone see or sniff her. Once that's taken care of, and she's found to be healthy, I would just keep her in the bathroom for a few days and let everyone sniff under the door. Then slowly, one by one, take the resident cats in to meet her. There will be some hissing and maybe a swat or two, but as long as there's no blood shed..... Just do short periods of time where they can see each other, then take resident cat back out. I would wait to introduce Nilla until newbie is a little more secure. You wouldn't want to scare her right away with an excited doggie.

I would not recommend the carrier. She may feel intimidated and get real defensive if everyone else gangs up on her, which would also be a bad way to start off her stay.

I know others will have good advice also. Just want to say thanks for helping her out and good luck. She looks like a real sweetie.

    She is absolutely beautiful! Congratulations!

But I echo everyone else's sentiment - please take her to the vet to have her tested for any diseases that could be transferred to your cats, and make sure she doesn't have any parasites they could get.

Once she's go the clear sign from the vet, you can do whatever you think is best to introdcue your cats to her. remember you know them best! I had the kittens in a cage in the room for a day and my boys sniffed at them. Some people keep the new cat enclosed for a few days and after the first day they bring out a blanket the new cat slept on for the other cats to get used to the new cat's smell.

Keep in mind that for the first few days, or even weeks, there will be a lot of hissing and growling. Thats normal.

She's gorgeous! I'm so glad Emily was grabbed up before those hunters did something unthinkable to her. Ditto on the advice already posted, and good luck with the vets, and introductions.
