    Pet Mallard :)

here is a photo of my pet Mallard duck, Pistashio.

If you're wondering what that thing on his tail is, it's a duck daiper! You buy duck daipers here:

    Mallard :)

they're wonderful (not to mention beautiful) pets, but ducks in general are messy and high maintinence. However they are the dogs and cats of the bird world! I can snuggle up with Pistashio anytime I like. This is because he's imprinted on me (As I am typing this, he is falling asleep on my lap! )

Cool! Is he potty trained? Does he have a cage? How does he *live* inside? Just curious. Does he have a pool to swim in?

He's REALLY cute. Welcome to Pet Talk, btw.

    To popcornbird:
-No unfortunately it's nearly impossible to potty-train ducks, as they don't have bowel glands to "hold it". You can teach them, but they'll always have accidents.
-Nope, no cage, but he does have a very large playpen for when we're gone. Actually cages can cause foot injuries to ducks, so they shouldn't be used.
-Yep, he LIVES indoors. We have a nice big backyard and are trying ot get him to like it (i'd like to play with the hose with him & pull out the kiddie pool for him out there) but he doesn't like it. What duck would when you can have air conditioning and warm baths? Be he does swim in our bathtub when he wants to swim; we make it nice and warm, and its big to him since he's just a little mallard, not a big Pekin or anything.

    To BCBlondie:
Yep they are messy, but most of the mess is contained since he has a diaper, and we have a lot of tile. But that still leaves a lot of cleaning for me! But it is worth it, he's the greatest pet I've ever owned!

What a great fellow, Pistachio is!!!! And it sounds like you have a good routine for him. Obviously, a duck is not an ideal pet for many people, but I love reading about your relationship with him! Sounds like it is a match made in heaven!

How did you come about getting him? He's just too handsome!!!!

Dirty Bird was one of my favorite, all time, Pets of the Day. I thought you might like to read about him.

    To Logan:
-As funny as it might sound, a duck was my "dream pet" from a young age. In order to have a mallard legally without a permit, they must be purchased from a certified breeder or hatchery. I purchased Pistashio from Metzer Farms Duck & Goose Hatchery ( www.metzerfarms.com ). He has been my best friend ever since

-I've read Dirty Bird's story before That's one of the first things I did when I found Pet of the Day was search for previous Duck or Geese.

Awsome! I have 2 pet mallards, but not in the house!

Does your mallard always stay the colors he is in the pic? My mallards look like that in the summer and spring, but know that it is getting a little colder out they aren't as pretty...

No actually right now he's in Eclipse plumage, but during the time we took the photo then he was in his Breeding plumage. Your Mallards, Swedish & Pekin are adorable! what's their names?
