A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter rescued a man and his cat who had been trying to ride out Hurricane Frances on the man's sailboat anchored in Biscayne Bay on Saturday.

Bob Mann had anchored his 45-foot boat days in the bay off Miami days earlier, Coast Guard officials said.

On Friday, he radioed the Coast Guard, asking for help getting his anchor unstuck. Because he was not in immediate danger, he was told to either cut his line or hire a commercial salvage operator to help him. He refused, officials said.

On Saturday, as winds in the bay reached 50 mph and the five-foot waves crashed against his boat, Mann contacted the Coast Guard again and asked to be rescued because he wanted to flee the storm.

Because Coast Guard ships could not safely reach Mann, a helicopter was sent to pick him up and his cat. They were lifted by cable onto the helicopter and taken to the Coast Guard air station in Opa-locka.
