Minimum wage varies by state (in the US) doesn't it? What is the minimum wage where you live?

I was talking to my friend earlier who works at a gas station...she was reading something about minimum wage. I believe she said it's $5.75 an hour here (Utah) and it's been that since 1997. It really sucks IMO because the cost of living has raised considerably since then so wages should too!

I believe its $6.75 in California. That is actually quite sad considering the insane living expenses here.

Over here it's generally $8 per hour. I think it's roughly $6 in US currency?

For first jobs, minimum wage is $6 per hour ($4.50 USD). It only applies to people with no paid work experience before November 15, 2001. After 500 hours, they move up to $8+.

I think our minimum wage is something like $5.90 (Canadian) here.

ugh, Jersey's is 5.15. That's really sad. You'd have to make quadruple that just to afford to live on your own in a studio apartment, factoring in car ins., food, etc.

It depends on what kind of job it is. If you're about 18-19 years old and get a job in a Supermarket, the minimum wage is about $14-15 an hour I think. A newly trained hairdresser would get about $ 16-17.

My friend's son just got a job at the football stadium, selling beers, chips etc. he gets $19 an hour. He's 18 years old.

Well, those are the lowest paid jobs I can think of.

I thought it was $5.15 here, but that website says it's $4.25 Can that be right? Who could live on that???

*EDIT* it's not $4.25 now, it' is $5.15 Ohio But geesh it's only $2.13/hr for tipped employees (which is what I get paid).

Here is the story on minimum wage. There is a federal minimum wage and a state minimum wage (maybe...there are some states that have NO minimum wage) and some cities/municipalities have higher minimum wage (called living wage.) If a company is engaged in Interstate Commerce (broadly interpreted) it is subject to the federal minimum wage. If there is also a state or local minimum wage....whichever is more generous to the employee is the one that applies.

There are businesses that are exempt from minimum wage....primarily agriculture. Tipped employees are treated differently but regardless how you are paid (hourly, commission, piece rate)it must come to at least the applicable minimum wage.

Nevada is 5.15 and soonly (I'll believe it when I see it) it should go up to 5.75. But luckily, most casinos and stores around here at least pay at minimum 8, some even go as high as 10 for the minimum and thats starting. If you do a good job generally you'll end up with a raise in 6 months. Its the fast food places that really stick it to people at the absolute min wage (then again they try to cut EVERY corner it seems).

$5.15 here too. Ugh, I'm glad I make more than that but I can't imagine how someone can live off of that.

Its $7.00 min wage. Use to be 6.85 2 yrs ago. I think if ur under age u get paid even less, but I don't know what their idea is of under aged. cause its not 16 or 18, I'm guessing its younger.

& u don't have to work so many hours to get a raise, its time. & they don't have to give u a raise if they don't want to.

I didn't know that diff areas of Canada had diff. pay rates
