    Justice for Max the Cat

Meow101 sent me the URL for this petition earlier. Given the recent spate of discussion on this board about cruelty to animals, I think you will all find it very timely. Please have a look.

One has to hope that one day we will never have to hear stories like these, or have to sign petitions like these, ever again. The good thing is that the Internet helps to make people more aware of abuse and cruelty to animals and how they can do something about it.

    Pam_Pesto,
Thank you for posting this. We really need to help these poor animals, just think if they were ours. I've signed the petitions more than once, but I signed in different names. Example: Boogie H.
I'll be on the look out for more petitions.

A few months ago our government proposed to pass legislation to toughen up the animal cruelty laws (in Canada). Now normally, I hate our government, but they made very happy with that proposition. However, there was public "outcry." People were shocked that the government could even THINK of wasting time with such ideas, when there are so many MORE IMPORTANT things that needed to be dealt with. I remember reading letters to the editor in a major paper (The Ottawa Citizen) where people berated the idea of having tougher laws against animal cruelty, and dismissed it as a waste of time. Well, that plan was shelved.

To me, that sort of thing is an example of human imperialism. If something doesn't benefit them specifically, they don't want it. It makes me very angry. Once I am through school and I'm not tens of thousands of dollars in debt I am going to try to do something. I'm not sure what yet, but I am going to do something.

There is one thing for sure; animal cruelty is everywhere I'd even say widespread and prolific. Do you agree with me or am I just weird:- the fact that I can't do anything when I hear the details of cruely just frustrates me that I have to suppress a tearful rage inside me Ok, I accept I just might be a weirdo, dancing to a different drum, but still, I'd rather have compassion in my life, than an empty black Spirit. Do you feel the same?

Dear hearts my words aren't much, but think about this- What goes around comes around, 3 fold......they'll get theirs!!

Why you get into a profession that deals with animals, when you hate animals, is beyond me. I don't think I'll ever understand that. And how you could bring yourself to do such a putrid act to anything...... I can just say no more after reading those petitions. Ofcourse I signed them.

I was wondering that, myself, Gina. Is animal cruelty really so widespread and prolific? Or do we just hear about it more often and more easily than we used to because of the power of the Internet? I really hope that acts of animal cruelty aren't truly increasing, it just seems that way.

    Ben-

I know what you mean. I once worked for a vet who clearly had no interest in or compassion for animals. He was a vet because his dad was and his brother was, (they were both excellent, professional, and compassionate) so I guess it never occurred to him that he could have been a teacher or an astronaut or something. While he was never cruel (at least not that I ever witnessed) he certainly was not someone who should have ever gone into the profession. Incidentally, his dad and his brother had large, thriving practices, while his was struggling. What does that tell you? Contrast that with my vet who discreetly wipes away tears when he has to put an animal down.

It enrages me how some people feel that they have the right to go through life without any regard or compassion for other living beings.
Stories such as these really break my heart, especially since my first cat, my dear, sweet Sydney, died in the hands of his Vet years ago.
We need more severe punishments for animal abusers! Maybe we can't turn them into compassionate human beings, but we can certainly make them think twice before harming an innocent creature.

I had a truly heartbreaking experience with a vet when my cat Chelsea was dying.
We had arranged to have the vet come out and euthanize Chelsea, as he was dying of cancer, and we thought that it would be nicer for him to die at home with his family around him.
The vet was supposed to arrive at 9 am, as Chelsea had had a particularly bad night, and we didn't want him suffering any more. The vet never showed at all the whole day. So we called, and she said that she was too busy, but would come the next day. At this point we feared that just putting Chelsea in a car to take him to another vet would kill him, so we agreed.
She arrived late again the next day. I had Chelsea on my lap, and she took him off my lap, pinned his head to the table, and injected him, he died a few seconds later, but not before letting out the most terrible yelp. Then without pause she asked us if we were going to pay by cash, credit or cheque.
No compassion at all, and she was very rough in her handling of Chelsea. It made a very tough day a thousand times worse.
It is my opinion that vets, like doctors, should be as sensitive as possible in situations like this.
One thing I did do was inform everyone I knew about how this vet behaved, hopefully people would think twice about going there.
I got a new vet, who is wonderful, very gentle with my cats, and very kind. His name is Dr. Hugh Chisolm, and I would recommend him to anyone. His web page is http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/hugh.chi.../Home_Page.htm . It has a really cute virtual tour.

Seeing that your vet had their own website made me wonder if mine does. I did a search on Google and did not find that they have a website, but I did find someone else's web page that mentions them-Harwood Road Animal hospital:

I even found a picture of my vet's lab coat!

And isn't that little guy he's examining just the cutest?

I just visited your vet's site. It is wonderful! How long did it take to get all those pictures of Carter? I bet you love going there. They look like they're top notch.
