In South Carolina and Georgia, where I grew up, they were called cockleburrs.
Also, I heard on Paul Harvey that the guy who invented VELCRO got the idea from cockleburrs after walking in the woods.

Out here in Nv we call em goatheads...and boy you know it when one gets stuck in your shoe!!! *ow ow ow* I hate it when the dog picks em up and you *try* carefully to get them out but the dang things wont come out without tugging and most of the time at least I end up with a stab wound in my fingers as a result!
And they are imposible to get off of blankets lol.
