Feline timekeepers in general

Enjoyed the postings on cats and wake-up calls, but has anyone else noted that cats can tell time all day! For our 3 cat family, 9 p.m. is supper time. Pippin, the alpha Aby, comes into the family room and starts doing cute stuff...poses on the rug, etc. If that doesn't do it, he jumps up on the kitty condo and starts throwing out his toys. Meanwhile, the other two take up station, Wynkie by the basement door and Lil Guy on the kitchen counter, and give us that fixed stare combining woefulness, faint hope and helpless trust that cats do so well. The spooky thing is that it's always precisely on time...and Pip knows when we switch to and from Daylight Time. Aren't cats delightful?!

Bouja and Bushes know exactly when I'm due home from work. They're right by the door waiting for me. When I get home early, they are always startled and have to stroll out from the bedroom to get the whole story. I sit on the couch and they come up for pets and explanations. Dinner is at 7pm, stringtime (their favorite play toy) is at 9pm and bedtime is around 11pm. If I deviate from the schedule, they get extremely grumpy. They push things off counters, tables, windowsills, anywhere high. They also will take out their frustrations on the Christmas cactus. The poor plant has little teeth marks all over it!

My cats do not always greet me at the door. Sometimes they are in one of their many deep sleeps when I come in. Then again maybe they are just ignoring me because, come to think of it, if I happen to be carrying in grocery bags they are all over me trying to see what I bought (as if they could read the labels! )

I've always thought the cats were by the door waiting for me because they could hear my car drive up. But since I have been home during the day, I've noticed Big (who is essentially my son's cat) starts pacing between the window that faces the parking lot and the window that opens to the patio about 15 minutes before my son's due home from school. Since I have no daytime rituals that are cueing him, it must be that he has a sense of time.
