    sore nose

My Lhasa Apso has a really dry, red and flaky nose and I was wondering if anyone else has ever had a similiar problem with their pets?
I have asked my vet twice now about his problem and he told me to use stainless steel dishes for him.
I do, yet he still continues to have this. I've noticed it for the past couple years now and when I look back at his "baby" pictures his nose is fine...very black. Now, (my poor baby) his nose almost looks "raw", very pinkish-red in color with some spots of white.
My mother thought it might be due to his light coloring(white/tan).
Does anyone know what this might be or what is causing this?
He likes to use his nose to "bury" his rawhides, toys, etc. but, could it be to the point that he is hurting his nose by doing this? He doesn't seem to be in any pain that I know of although, he doesn't like us to touch it.

My dog has the same thing. I don't remember what my vet called it but it is uncurable. The medicine cost us $90.00 a month and didn't help much. I am on this site looking for more help as he has had this for three years now and it is just getting worse.

I asked my vet again and he told me to put Vasoline on it. I have to make sure to rub it in pretty good otherwise he tries to lick it off. That's all I've been told so far, he didn't say anything else about it. I don't know what it is called or what it is caused from....if you find out I'd really appreciate it!

    sore nose

Sorry it took so long to get back. I've been waiting for my vet to call back. He did not write anything in my dogs chart about this problem. The vet was here to take care of a horse when I originally asked him about the dog so he just put a little note on the horse billing about it. Soooo my vet was not very helpful. I have been putting pure emu oil on my dogs nose for the last 4 days and it is really helping him. If you have never used emu oil and plan on using it be careful. Emu oil will absorb any dirt or what ever is on the skin surface right into the skin. Purified Emu is safe to eat. I still plan on looking into this condition further. If I find anything more I will post it to you.

Thank you, it's worth trying. I've tried vasoline, chap-stick, you name it. His nose just seems to get worse!

    Ok get this....
My post was originally about my Lhasa's "sore nose", now he has scabs all over. Well not everywhere, but he does have 2 spots on his back that he constantly licks at. He also has a spot on each ear! I don't get it! I'm not sure how he got these. My husband wants me to take him to the vet. Has anyone here ever heard of this or knows what it is??? At first sight, I thought the scabs on his back was from a tick but, my husband doesn't think that's it. He has 2 spots on his back...one is very red and looks like a scab is about to come off. The other is just starting to become red. He still has the flaky, dry nose. Also, recently I noticed a spot on each ear, that looks very dry and flaky almost blackish - gray in color. (He doesn't like me to touch any of it.) I have been using the "emu oil" when he lets me put it on but, does anyone have any other suggestions? I've tried researching online and have come across many skin conditions. So far, all it has done is confuse me more, making me wonder WHAT IT IS & HOW HE GOT IT!
