peeing

I am having a peeing problem with my 8 month old male cat felix (cat of the day, november 6, 2000). The first time he peed on my bed around age 6 months, a couple days after i locked him out of the bedroom and bought a brand new mattress/boxspring, both to improve my quality of sleep. I can see how he put two and two together. So he was neutered and welcomed back into my bedroom, never to be kicked out or off the bed again, but he peed right on my chest while i was asleep! He went to the vet and was found to have a urinary tract infection; he took ten days of antibiotics, and two weeks later he peed on my bed again, but this time his urinalysis was negative. I removed the feather bed, in case he smelled his previous pee on it. He did fine for about a month, until i bought a brand new feather bed, and the second day he peed on that. I should mention i have another, older cat who predates felix. He admires her but acts like a big bully and attacks her too. They are getting to be better friends but are not there yet.
Does felix hate my new mattress, my new feather bed, my other cat, or me? how can i get him to stop? his litter box(es) are always clean and he doesn't mind them. Is he just being territorial? Does the smell of goose down get his bladder going? What can i do about it? I am grateful for any suggestions/insight. Felix's owner.

Boy, I sure wish that I had an instant answer for you. I have a large orange tabby that adopted me about a year and a half ago. He just loves to be in the house and quickly got the idea of how wonderful it is to be in a home. However, he sprays everywhere. I have heard that there is a new product on the market through your vets only. It is a spray (little tiny bottle) and it costs about $35.00. I haven't tried it, but I think I may have to soon. In my case, I think it is related to my neighbors three cats who are outdoor cats and love to come over and spray my yard at night while my two cats are indoors. It is probably the least desirable aspect of having cats. I have a dark green carpet with yellow stains that will not come out to prove it. What is frustrating is that where do you start to use this new product as the male sprays everywhere in the house. Good luck, if I try the product, I will post my results. And yes, both of my cats have been spayed or neutered.

I think I know the name of that expensive little bottle. It's called Feliway and can be bought from your veterinarian. I mentioned in another post that my sister is using it on plants and furniture to keep her cats from digging and clawing. I don't know about whether it will help with the spraying problem, but I'm sure your vet can tell you. It is a small pump sprayer. She brought it with her over Thanksgiving to keep her two cats out of my mother's plants! I would say that it is $35 well spent if it keeps them off of expensive furniture and keeps them from putting dirt all over the carpet.

mybe he's peeing on it because it is a feather bed. mybe it smells weird and he's trying to cover up the smell

Well when my room mate had a cat it peed all over her feather pillows. So she took it to the vet after the 3rd time it peed on her pillow(she cleaned it of coarse) he gave her some cat nip spray to spray on her pillow for about $3. and in a couple of weeks the cat had a new best friend, the feather pillow! Awwwwwww=)

I had as many as six cats on ceramic tile and hardwood floors, and never had a pee problem, even on the throw rugs, except with one cat who had bouts of FUS. He would use the bathtub most of the time, occasionally the rugs on the ceramic tile. The litter box was kept on the hardwood floor with a large carpet sample underneath which I replaced frequently (had a friend who worked at a floor company, so I had an endless supply-but a bathmat or something else washable would do). No damage was ever done to the wood or the tile grout. You might want to check out the Pergo floors, too, I don't have personal experience but they're supposed to be very stain resistant.
