What kind of training treats do you give to your dog?

Following up on my previous thread about the type of treats work for Gigi's training. I want to know what you give to your dog when you train? At home, I just give Gigi dry soft treats from PetsMart. And when we are outside of home, I have to give her hotdog or cheese. I am going to use chicken too. I believe variety is important too. And soft is preferred over hard/crunchy type, as the softer ones are easier to swallow and doesn't require lots of chewing.

Well in the matter of treats, right now, Major has: Puppy milkbones, noname biscuits, Snausages, Puperoni, Beefhide strips and some rawhide bones.

I usually cut tiny cubes of cheese for training treats. They also like home made liver treats that our trainer makes - they smell revolting though!

For training;
I use broken up milkbones or just pieces of kibble.
When they get the trick on their own for the first few times, I reward them with something good like cheese.


Treats in general;
Milkbones, Scooby Snacks, k9 CarryOuts, Beggin strips, and whatever other treats people give us (As gifts and such)

Well I can't really tell you what Major likes best...he eats everything I guess he likes his rawhide bones the best, but they aren't training treats.

Jen, you might want to try freeze dried liver. I find that a lot of dogs LOVE it. Kai and Kaedyn go crazy for it. It's a bit pricier though. I think a fairly small tin was almost $20 dollars.

Some of the really good stuff I use are cheese, hot dogs, and freeze dried liver for new commands and for recall. For obedience, I use no treats. For tricks where I can't inforce whether they obey or not (bark for instance), I use whatever they'll take. Kaedyn will eat just about anything so we usually have Old mother hubbard hard treats, liver squares from the local dog bakery, and just about anything else I can find. Kai's picky so I often use Roll Over (which is actually a dog food). I cut the roll over into really small bits.

For training I use Liver Chiplets. It is what the trainer had and Katie loves them. I only use them for training though. I can't remember what they cost but I think they are a bit expensive. When I use them I break off a tiny piece to make them last longer. I also make my own tuna dog treat recipe which I got off of someone here. It is great and Katie also loves those as well. I can't find the recipe right now though. Very easy to make also. I also work without treats and just use high praise as well. If the girls do what I ask I shout out "YES" and give lots of head and belly rubs.

Greta is allergic to anything with wheat in it, so we have to be careful with treats. She and Cassius LOVE the liver bits we got in petsmart, and we did a lot of their training with them. Like everyone else has said, they're expensive, so we tried to give them small pieces. We also use scooby snacks, nutro lamb & rice chops, and IVD vegetable/fruit treats.

I use freeze-dried liver. I bought a little bucket for $14 but it has lasted pretty well, and the pups just love it.

I use tiny pieces of cooked Hot Dog and Cheese. Clover will work for anything edible.

And with Elvis it has to be somthing smelly so for this weekends class i am going to cook up some liver and see how he likes it. I have also used dried liver but with minimal success.

For regular training stuff I use hot dog and cheese. But for Oz overcoming his fear of the teeter totter, I used Cheez Whiz and Liver paste. I'd leave a lil' trail, of either, on the board and he'd eat his way over the board. Didn't take long for him to decide that teeter wasn't half bad. I'd only give him this treat for the teeter, so it'd be special. Also for weave poles, I'd give him Popeye's Biscuit. I wanted him to be real fast through the poles, so that's the only place he gets that special treat.

Looks like freeze dried liver is the best choice. Can I get those from PetsMart??? If not, where can I get them? I am gonna start giving less treats at home. But when we are at our class, I can't compete with all the distractions, so I have to give her the good stuff. Maybe when she gets older it will get better, so I don't have to give out as much treats.

Huey loves smoked salmon. I had a bag in the fridge one time and my friend ate some before realizing there were also bits of hot dog and science diet puppy food in there! It was Huey's bag of training treats!

I saw at PetSmart yesterday a baggie full of teeny Greenie chips....you might try that!!!!
