New Tricks??

I want to teach Tikeya to go (Round) Trick.. Any info on training could help .. She gets very frustrated when she doesn’t do tricks properly, she will flop onto her back and give up .. Yes you all know she is a stubborn Siberian... .. But Now that I have crate trained her, I feel really confident about teaching her cool tricks ...

Good for you. Sounds like things are going well.

I think I would use clicker training and slowly shape the behavior. I am on my way out, but when I get back I can explain it better if you like.

If Tikeya gets frustrated when she is learning a new trick, you probably want to break it down into smaller parts.

First you have to establish the relationship between the click and a treat - spend a couple of days doing 3 - 5 minute sessions where you just click - treat, click - treat, click treat.

Then when you are ready to train the behavior - write down how you can break it into parts. Something like this

Step 1 - Dog turns head in correct direction - reward

Step 2 - Dog starts moving in that direction - reward

Step 3 - Dog does a quarter turn in that direction - reward

Step 4 - Dog does a half turn in that direction - reward

Step 5 - Dog does a 3/4 turn in that direction - reward

Step 6 - Dog does full turn - reward - jackpot

Not these steps do not need to happen in the same training session. You might work for 1 session clicking and treating the head turn then the next session waiting for her to turn the correct direction and taking a step before you click and treat and so on.

One thing you must do is always end training sessions on a positive note. If she is having trouble at any stage, back up to the previous one and work on it some more. If Tikeya is getting frustrated, you might be trying to move too far too fast.

what do you use for a clicker??? i havent seen any around here before...

$10 bucks!!!! ... i am not going to buy a clicker for 10$... Im cheep lol.

LOL! I bought mine for a few dollars at a local pet supply store. If you have a bosleys there, they should carry it.

Petco, Petsmart and Pets Supplies Plus all sell them for about 99 cents. They are usually at the checkout stand on one of the displays.

The trick to the trick is:

1. Tell your puppy to sit.
2. Put a treat in your hand so the dog can see it. If the dog stands up, when it sees the treat, get it to sit and remain sitting.
3. Slowly go with the treat around the left side of their face. As they try to maintain eye contact with the treat, they will begin to get up and follow it.
4. Give the command "turn".
5. Assuming the dog completes the turn, reward with the treat.

The hardest part is to keep them sitting when they first see the treat.

Bonus: The roll over is the same trick! The only difference is that they start out in the laying position. In fact it may be better to teach them to roll over first. As when they attempt to follow the treat with their eyes they will flip on over. Given the down position is the most neutral posture, it's easier in some way to teach them this trick than the turn.

If they master the trick with the treat showing, then the next step is to stand a few feet away and do give the command with a circular hand motion. My Daisy dog that I recently lost after 12 years, would respond to hand signals(no voice command) from a distance of 20 ft to turn or roll over.

That's how I taught both Simba & Nala.

I turned them in a circle and said "Turn" as I did it.

You could use one of those clicking pen, that will work too. As long they can associate the click=treat, that's all to it. Clicker training is great. I am still learning that, but I find it quite effective.
