    Non-allergic breeds

I have been allergic to animal hair since I was a child but I would love to adopt a small dog.

Is anyone aware of a breed or breeds that do not cause allergic reactions?

    Thanks.

Schnauzers! They dont shed and have no oder to them they are great dogs and they come in three sizes, miniature, standered and, Giant. My dog Katie is a schnauzer mix and is the best thing that ever happened to our family. She is playful, protective, and loves to cuddle. They are the perfect dog. There are other toy dogs that are good for allergies. Hmm I think poodles, maltese, I cant think of alot. But if you do some research Im sure you will find a good dog. Katie is in my signature below.
If you have any questions on schnauzers just pm me

Amber is right, some dogs don't have fur but "human hair". I read that people are usually allergic to the dog's fur so basically almost any dog that doesn't shed would make a good dog for you. I can think of Shnauzers, Malteses, Poodles and Shi-Tzu's. I could be wrong though.

I know Poodles and Schnauzers don't shed, but I believe shih tzu and maltese do some...not positive on that though.

However, with a breed like that, they may not shed but their hair grows profusely and requires a lot of grooming.

Not with my dogs...Reggie and Smokey always stink. Nebo's the one who always smells nice and has no "doggy odor." lol

    There's also some hairless breeds.

However, you may want to find somebody with a breed of dog like that and be around them to find out if the dog still would bother your allergies.

From what I have heard, there are no treuly hypo-allergenic breeds. Some of the better ones have mentioned, others include Wheaton Terriers, Bischon Frises, and I believe Airedale Terriers and Portugese Water Dogs. I would also think Chinese Crested and Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican Hairless) would be okay since they are both hairless breeds.

Bichons and poodles are good for people with allergies.

That's why poodles are often bred with labs or goldens to be aid-dogs. So that the person doesn't have to deal with the allergies and shedding that a purebred golden or lab might create.

Actually it's not the fur that causes allergies, it's the dander. The dander comes from the saliva get get on the fur when they clean themselves. Don't that don't shed or shed less are better for people with allergies because the dander doesn't spread as quickly. WIth dogs that shed because their hair gets everywhere that means the dander gets everywhere. Dogs such as poodles, bichons, and some of the other dogs mentioned are not totally hypo allergenic, but they will be better on your allergies since the dander isn't all over your house. You'll need to bathe them regulary to get rid of some of the dander that remains on the surface of the fur and also you may need to wash your hands after playing with them to keep you from speading the dander to your face.,

Thanks for the great signature Kay!

    Your welcome Canvendish

Are you *really allergic* to dogs or is it only a slight reaction? I read up on some sites some "tips" you can do to avoid terrible allergies. I can find it if you like...

Exactly! That's just what I was going to post, Laura!

My Shih Tzu doesn't shed at all, but like Amy said she does have to be groomed regularly. We usually take her in every 3-4 weeks, with a bath every Saturday in between.

I know that greyhounds have a very low occurance of allergies. They have very short hair, barely shed, have little dander (if any) and don't have that dog smell. We have a small greyhound (55lbs) but she can curl up so small!

    snauzers!!!!!!!!!!!!

me and my little sister have LOTS of alergies...including dog dander...

first...look to get a dog with fur...not hair....

    snauzers!
i got one a white one...
if you want a small dog...get a miniture snauzer...
they anre like 10 to15 pounds normaly. mine is 25..."gotta be the puppy chow" bt on the other hand the other 3 white ones i know are his size...all the others are small.
hehe...hes akc..or purebreed...mom said no mixes so there was no chance of shedding.. have not had any reactions... we maild in registration papers and gotthem back saying therre was no such thing as a "white schnauzer" this was 8 years ago. we had to mail in his papers..pictures..etc.
now there are more and more "white ones"
DID YOU KNOW?:: along long time ago white snauzer puppies were exicuted because they wer supossedly"evil","wrong",an "imperfection",etc.

get a snauzer!!! get a black or pepper one if you want a small one though...heh...just my experience...
