Thinking of Breeding My Shih Tzu

    Dear Members,

I am currently having a 7mths old male Shih Tzu, and will be having a 4 mths old female Shih Tzu joining the family this sunday. I am still thinking if I should breed and carry on the line...any advise from anyone?

Pls share your experiences if any....thanks.

Why? What's the point? It's not fun for the bitch, and you are adding to the high population of dogs.

Unless you are a PROFESSIONAL breeder, interested in improving the line, DON'T BREED. Improving the line takes YEARS, and breeding more than one dog...

    DO NOT BREED YOUR DOGS

Hi Moshi and welcome to Pet Talk. I hope you aren't feeling a little overwhelmed with the responses so far, but most, if not all of us would not be in favor of you breeding your dog. I think probably first and foremost, if you aren't already a professional breeder who is trying to better the breed and know exactly what you are doing, you are probably going to make mistakes. Breeding is serious business. I know others will add more to this topic and the subject of homeless pets, back yard breeders, disease, etc. will come up but I just wanted to welcome you to Pet Talk as we really are a nice bunch of people. If you would like, please feel free to post a picture of your little shih tzu. We love pictures and would enjoy meeting him!

    Welcome to PT!

Even though some of the responses you got were rough at first, please don't think we're not nice people...we are!
Here at PT don't believe in breeding unless you are an experienced breeder.
I do hope you decide to stay around and share some pictures, we just adore pictures

Thanks for all your advices...indeed I do not know much about breeding. I will drop this thoughts...cos' I do not want to see so many stray dogs and homeless too...very disheartening.

I understand all your points about breeding...in that case, do I have to do something about both the male and female dogs?

Isn't that a little cruel too?

Have attached one of Moshi's picture...have not got my female Shih Tzu home yet...

Awww Moshi is so cute! You should get both of them spayed and neutered, it will be so much better for them. Not only will you not have to worry about them getting pregnant, but spaying and neutering reduces and eliminates the chances of getting certain cancers. Dogs also live a longer and healthier life if they are spayed or neutered.

    Thanks...

I will do it for their good health definitely!
When is a good time to do it? For Moshi is 7 mths and Mitsu is about 4 mths I guess...
Will they be ok emotionally...don't want to have their character changed by me doing that....

They're at a good age to do it. Is Mitsu your female? Because this is a very good time to do it since she probably hasn't hit her first heat cycle yet.

    Hi, and welcome to PT!

I agree with everyone else, spay and neuter is the way to go! Alot of vets neuter as early as 8 weeks, so both of your dogs are at a good time to do it. Especially the female, since she probably hasn't hit her first heat cycle yet.

It is a myth that the personality of a dog changes. It is very minimal. the dog might become clamer and less active (A reason that some become overweight -- the owner notices the decrease in energy and makes the mistake of not exersising it well enough).

Spaying and neutering is also the healthiest thing to do. Cuts down cancer risks sooooo much.
    I've been BOO'd!
