That's interesting, thelwell! But here in America we also use (sp?) as a proper grammatical abbreviation noting possible spelling error. One of those dreaded red marks often found on term papers!

Yes, I use it when I'm not sure of the spelling of a word and I'm too lazy to actually look it up and type it correctly. Much easier to type (sp?) and let people know that sometimes I'm an idiot.
