    Mishi and his Mousie

OMG! He gave me quite a scare this morning. Mishi has gotten into the habit of carrying his mousies around the house with him, bringing them to bed and giving them baths. I know ... very cute! He was doing this this morning and I wanted to get some pics for y'all. I kept checking on him to see if I could get a cute pic and walked into the bedroom to see him with the mousie hanging from his mouth, looking extremely cute. Then I realized it wasn't cute, he was in trouble -- the mousie's tail was stuck down his throat! He had been giving it a very thorough cleaning, and was licking the tail (it's quite long) and the tail went down his throat and got stuck. He was desperately gulping and trying to get it to come up. Poor baby. I gently extracted the dangling mousie from his mouth - the tail was completely soaked - and he just kept gulping and looking at me with his big green eyes. Poor baby! He would have choked if I hadn't been around to rescue him! Now I'm going to have to hide the mousies when I go out. Be forewarned! I don't want any of our cats to choke on their mousie tails! Ah Kids!

I'm so glad that you were there to help him. I don't have to worry about this with my cats because they eat the tails off the mice right away. I've heard that this won't hurt them either. I know that leaving out string, rubber bands, twist ties, and ribbon is also dangerous. I always put these in a drawer. I'm so glad that Mishi is okay.

For this reason, I always cut the tails off the mousies before I let the kitties have them. I've never had a problem since, and I don't have to hide them anymore when I'm not home

I do the same thing to Tux's mousies.

It's a good thing you were there when it happened RedHedd. You saved one of his nine lives!

Me too! I sometimes get rid of the eyes as well as sometimes they can come off.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand and strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming WOO HOO - What a Ride!

    Mouse tails

I've been concerned because the tails on the mice don't stay on them very long and I'm sure they are retrieved by the vacuum but I never see them. I think I'll just take the tails off new mice before they are given to the cats. Thanks for the heads-up and I'm so glad your Mishi is okay.

Actually they both still bat around the now tailless white mousie, it just doesn't get carried around as much, but I do find it in strange places around my small apartment so I know they're not ignoring it.
