    Ridgeback mixed?!

I was just sitting here and cami was hearing some kids playing outside.. So she started to bark at them. I noticed when i said Cami who is that.. Cami get em and like it got her anxious and like scared i guess. So she kept barking. So i looked on her back and she had a patch of fur {its longer than the rest} that was standing up.. And then the hair thats longer than the rest its like a narrow strip down her back. it was all standing up.. So she was freaked out i can tell. But my sisters dog did the same thing when cami and razz were meeting eachother for the first time the hair on their back stood up.. But her dog is ridgeback greyhound mixed so i was wondering if ridgeback would have anything to do with the hair standing up..?? any info??

Her fur on her back probably just stood up because she was excited and aggitated. I really doubt she's mixed with Ridgeback...they are very large dogs, and the ridge on their back stays that way all the time, not just when they are excitied. I think the fur on the ridge actually grows in a different direction then the rest of the fur? Nebo has areas of his back that are longer then the others. The fur on his sides is much shorter then the fur on his neck and down the middle of his back.

Most breeds actually can get their 'hackles' up when they are excited.

As Amy said, with Ridgebacks, that strip of hair is always up.

Think of it this way...you know how the hair on your arms can stand up when your scared, or something? I'm guessing it's kind of like that for dogs. She was just excited or something and her fur kind of "stood" up.

I agree, Leather's hackles raise all the time lol. She is always very territorial.

my dog is Rhodesian Ridgeback and Rednose Pitbull. His ridge is always on his back. it is actually the fur growing the wrong way, like a calic. When he gets scared oor excited, it stands up on his butt and his neck. Hope this helps.

That's a great picture, calpitgal--thanks for sharing it. Oreo's hair between her shoulder blades stands up when she is excited, too. She's a lab, so I think that's possible for any breed.

I think it is normal. Two of our dogs - the mixed breed and the male dachshund - both of them have hair on their backs that stand up when they get excited. On Carly it's just the hair between her shoulders, but on Max there is a strip all the way down the middle of his back. He's so short and he looks so silly when he gets all puffed up to protect us and the hair on his back stands up. I know he could be tough if he wanted, but all I can think of is "What's he gonna do - gnaw someone's ankles off?!?"
