What if you could have a dog but only a breed that you don't like all that much?

I've got that exact problem. I live in Singapore and if I get all A1's for my GCE 'O' levels my dad will get me a pit bull terrrier or a boxer. The problem is that I don't like those breeds all that much (no offence if you own one of them!) Can anyone help?

All i gotta say PLEASE *gets down on knees* if you get a Pit Bull, treat it well with respect. You should treat all dogs well with respect... But PLLLLLLLLLEEEEASE train the Pit Bull well. DO NOT train him or her to fight. im begging you here! They are wonderful dogs both breeds and i love them both. You will see that Pit Bulls are really strong and muscular dogs and also if treated well with respect and are trained correctly.... they are better then (my opinion) ANY AKC registered lab!

Eudora, why don't you like those breeds? Have you ever known one personally? A lot of a dog's personality can be affected by how it is raised. Good job on your grades, why not find a litter of puppies, and see if any of them tug at your sleeve and heart? I have known boxers that were "guard dogs" because that family raised them to be, but I have also known other boxers who were sweet, lovable dogs who just wanted to play!

Haven't known any Pitbulls persoanlly, but I bet it's the same way with them!

Is there something particular you don't like about those breeds?

Is that the only two breeds your dad likes? Please look up a lot of information on any dog that you adopt.

What are the reasons that your dad says the dog could only be one of these two breeds. Once we know what his thinking is, maybe we could find some way for you to discuss the matter with him.

In my opinion, you can learn to love any breed or kind of dog. But, if you do not want a Pit or a Boxer, do not get one. They're not the kind of dog to just throw around. Actually, no dog is.

Hmmm...... thanks for your replies. First I will have to do well in my studies. Just can I ask you something? I said I was from Singapore. I bet most of you never even heard of my country. It is very small so there is not much space for a dog.... but that has nothing to do with it. I'm glad so many of you responded; thank you so so much. But I am stil slightly undecided whether my dad was joking. With my dad, you can never tell.

I was 18 when I first asked well I should say begged for my own dog. My parents wanted to get me a sheltie because thats the breed they like but ( no offence to sheltie lovers) I don't really like the breed. So I told them, look this will be my dog, my responsability, my time and love being spent with it so I would like to choose the breed. I told them I didn't like shelties and I went to them with info on beagles and told them this is what I want. They sat down and went through the info and research I had collected and told me that if a beagle is what I wanted then a beagle I could have. Go to your father with info on your breed of choice and have a calm mature conversation with him and Im sure he will let you have the breed you wish for.

    Good Luck !!

I totally agree!!!! But, yeah, like ilovehounds said, gather up information on the breed of your choice, and show it to your father! Good Luck!!!

I agree that Ilovehounds had an excellent idea. Be proactive! And of course we have heard of your country, a site of much commerce and trade. By the way, what kind of a dog do you think you might like. If you have not much space, a small dog is a delightful companion. Most dogs need a lot of exercise, hence it might be a little easier to meet that requirement with a small dog.

Well, then you would also know that people are not very open-minded about animals here and view them as an abomination... So I guess that you're right. The prob is that my dad wants a GUARD DOG, and I want a smaller dog that is easier to take care of. So what do I do now?

And I have to do well in my GCE 'O' levels first, if anyone remembers. Is there an exam that you have to take or something in America?? I'm just curious.

If I had to get a dog, but it was a breed I didn't like so much it would probably be a Labrador Retriever or Boston Terrier. I just don't like Labs because they get all the attention of being the 'greatest' with kids. No one can say that until they have owned every dog of every breed first. There are alot of other dogs I don't like, but the list would be to long. I also have a very good reason to dislike them too!
