I just wanted to say sorry to everyone who has had a birthday, reached pillar or tripple pillar or double and who has had family events. I have been sooo busy lately trying to look for a house to purchase as it seems I will be taking care of my father starting this summer. He is losing both of his legs because of complications to diabetes, and has now a blood infection. First they were only going to take one of his legs, it's purple but now he says they want the other one too. Hopefully I can get him some fake legs...forgot what they are called in the medical terms.


So please forgive me everyone. It's very hard for a 23 year old to raise a baby and deal with everything else all at once. Wolf_Q, I am very sorry for your loss. Lut congrats on your tripple pillar, YLL I know you made 500 so congrats on that also! I know there are more of you, you know who you are.

Luckies, sorry to hear about your dad. I hope everything turns out well. He is obviously very lucky to have a caring daughter like you. Good luck on finding a house too.

It's so hard with me over in Oregon and my father in California. I really need to talk to his doctor about his condition. He suffers from a lot of things...he lives on a morphine patch! I don't know if it's bad genes or bad luck, hopefully I will be healthier. He's only 63 too.

I am so sorry to hear about your dad. When you are looking at houses bear in mind that your dad may be in a wheelchair for a little while at first, so look at access points, turn around space, the width of the door frames, that sort of thing, with using a wheelchair in mind, some of which, access, steps etc will also count when he gets, and gets used to, his new legs. I know all this from when my husband, who was a wheelchair confined, and I were looking for new homes. Good luck and bless you for caring and taking care of your dad.

I agree with ChrisH, it's not going to work from the beginning with the prosthetic legs, so you have to watch for the appropriate house for a wheelchair.
Be strong, it's going to be hard.

I am so sorry to hear about your father. My great uncle lost both his legs from diabetes yet managed to lead a normal life. He never got prosthetic legs (his own choice). Your father is very lucky to have a caring daughter like you. Sadly, not many older parents are that fortunate.

Thank you all for the kind words. It really helps with all the things I am going through right now. There may be hope that he would only lose one leg....my dad always tells me the worst of it so I will be looking on the bright side of things until I speak to his doctor, which should be this weekend.


What really saddens me is that my father has only seen my son Dylan (14 months and now walking BTW, all the time now! ) once in all the time Dylan has been around. I just dreamed of my father playing with him etc.


My dad is really strong, he has so many problems but he deals with everything the best he can. He bought me a real pearl necklace for Christmas. Anyways, that was off topic...

Right now he HAS to move before his surgery because he lives in a trailor no smaller than our bedroom. *sigh* He can't work because he is constantly having surgeries on his back etc.

I love my dad very much and I would do anything for him! We were thinking of buying a house for ourselves anyway, but now this just pushes the time limit back. There is not a date yet set for the surgery but I will let you all know when I find out.

I think I may be able to claim him as a dependent on taxes yes, if I take care of him? I think the state also offers money when you need to care for a family member. Either way, he has made it clear that after he is fully recovered he wants to look for an apartment for himself, which I am sure we could find one...if they have wheelchair access etc.

Souraya- I would do anything for my father or anyone in my family. It is very sad there are people out there not willing to do this. I would want my kids to take care of me, hopefully they will. My brother refuses to have anything to do with it, and personally he cares he is just not mature or wise enough (even though 26) to take on that responsibility. And frankly, I don't trust him....long story. Plus he has a son and other things, never cleans his house so I wouldn't want my father living there. He can come here with me, hehe.

My dad has expressed his wishes on obtaining a dog. So I was thinking maybe we can get him a wheelchair dog if they have thouse? Does anyone know how we could go about doing this? I know there is Dogs for the Death, but is there any for wheelchair confined people? Plus he has strokes a lot and I know some dogs are trained to know when one is about to happen, they can sense it. Do you think this is a good idea? I know he wants a dog, and it would put me at ease!

funny you should mention an assistance dog. I just am studing them cuz i want to be a trainer for the programs. here are a couple of places. Most use rescue dogs from local shelters.

So sorry to hear about your father. I wish him, and you, well while recovering from surgery.
To answer your question, yes, there are dogs trained to assist people confined to wheelchairs. I've seen them many times in TV; they are usually Labs or Goldens. If you do an Internet/Google search I'm sure you'll find the information. It will be such a comfort for your dad to have such a companion.
Hope you find the ideal house soon.
