Psycho Cat

Tonight I watched Bastet go *feral*. In other words not her usual running around but a full on pelt to the table then a full on pelt up and down the stairs with fur and tail fully erect as though she was just scared out of her wits even though there was nothing to scare her. She would roll and be patted then take off again with the same symptoms. My flatmate beleives she is exhibiting symptoms of her loonieness for a change. Does this happen to anyone else? Sudden onset kitty looniness?

I suppose if I had only 1 or 2 cats, this sort of behavior would be seen, however, since there are so many in the house, any playing is usually with another, often unwilling, playmate. . I have seen them go "feral" once in a while, where their eyes are dialated, and they jump and run at anything, as though they are on catnip. Yet, when this type of behavior is shown, it seem to permeate through the entire pride, or at least through some of them. (Maybe it is the Moon?)

I guess all the Aby owners know that. Even 6 year old Filou can get absolutely crazy. I always say they are performing the historical play "The storm of the Mongole hordes"

Would you believe that I saved your cat's picture to my Favorites here at work? The picture was so adorable, and I loved the way you described her personality, ending with "Everyone loves my little pink abyssinian." So I hope Bastet is not giving you any cause for concern, because I truly love her and send her good thoughts, even though I have never met her! (I like her name, too ...)

Isabelle "goes feral" when the weather starts to get a little cooler here in hot and humid Houston, Texas.

If he is feeling a bit frisky, Norman, Isabelle's brother will join her. I think of it as a sign that winter is thankfully headed to our part of the world (or that I've cranked the ac too high)!

Having 12 cats, believe me "going feral" is a very common occurence around here! hahaha .... It is completely normal, just a fun way for them to play and use up some of that wild energy! Don't worry, just secure your breakables!

I am not concerned about Bastet *going feral* now. I thought it was a typical aby trait until someone pointed out to me that it wasn't and my cat was a *looney*. I love her dearly and if she wants to go screaming through the house like a cat with her tail on fire - thats fine with me!

Also have learnt - breakables IN Cupboards! *laughs*

Gosh, I too wish someone could explain their behavior. My three go bonkers every now and then. Sometimes it is brought on by toys, sometimes there is no explanation obvious to me!

Abys are very active kitties and stay that way for years. Fasten your seat belt!

Ha -this really upsets me

As Sasvermont says: abys are very active cats and they go feral from time to time. I always have the impression they have fun -and it makes me laugh.

Other cats have it too -some of the more quiet breeds maybe a little less.

House kitties show it more often than outdoor cats -ok this is their compensation for not being able to kill real prey and having in general a lazier life.

OMG! The worst offender in my house is Tex. No, wait, I think it is Dakky. Well, maybe not, it is Tenny, no, Georgia, no no no, I think it is Allie! The only non loony cat I live with is Minnie...and I am sure that is just because she isn't ready to be loony!

Cats are crazy crazy crazy. I would be afraid to understand their personality.

Around here I thought I saw this madness near a full moon. However as SAS says often there is no explanation. The wind , the weather, new toys.....the only thing I know is - it's not catnip. They don't need it to go "feral".

Reactions to catnip are a whole other story! Norman goes nutty over the stuff.

If I bring out the catnip container he starts meowing non-stop. Then, when he gets some catnip, he eats and rolls in it. When he gets that far away look in his eyes and his tail starts swishing, I know he is about to start chasing whatever imaginary prey he sees! After a bit of nuttiness, he settles in for a long, long nap to sleep it off!

Go feral, Random Cat Outbursts (or RCO's)....butof course! Ritz has it down to an art form.....wake from a nap, got an itch to burn off energy, and fwwwoooom ...up the stairs, down the stairs, sideways on the back of the couch (looks like law of gravity is temporarily suspended, we call this the "velcro kitty" maneuver)...then through the living room, into the kitchen and onto the linoleum, where she tries to stop but can't get traction, and does a "fat cat 180" where her rear end gravity takes over and slides around, bypassing her head, and thuds into the back door.

This precipitates a fuzztail reaction that takes about 5 minutes to die down totally, and if you walk into the room too fast, is often accompanied by that sideways, hump back dance..

I think it's comparable to human workout routines, perhaps "Schitzing to the Oldies"????
