    DNA Testing - Kit

I'm hoping this is the place to put this, so...

I've herd (and found) a DNA Test Kit, where one can send it in to a Lab, and find out what Breed (or mix) his animal is.

    Has anyone tried this ?

I was thinking that doing this test was VERY sensitive !
And if you contaminated the sample, you just waisted your money !

Now, I'm going to give you a link to a Kit that's available...
BUT, I'm not trying to sell this, and am not connected to it's source in any way. This is just for a reference.

    Anyone ?

I've talked to my vet about this and she said she's done one on a dog and it listed breeds that were unheard of and the dog looked nothing like. Plus, it listed LOTS of breeds for the one dog. I told her she should take a "pure bred" dog and do the test. But it costs too much money to test it out like that. I did not look at your kit for a price. But I would be curious to take my pure bred Aussie and try it out. I'd bet it comes back with more than just Australian Shepherd on it.
Then I saw a show on TV (a reality show) that they did a genetic test on their dog and it said 100% Bull Mastiff. So who knows?
Our goal in life should be - to be as good a person as our dog thinks we are.

Thank you for the siggy, Michelle!

I have head that certain breeds, they have the full gene description; other breeds, they have only part of it to test against. So this does impact the results some what.

As for a dog having a certain breed but not looking like that breed at all: Zeke is a rescue dog in Willy's class now. He has triple dew claws on his rear paws. Apparently, only Great Pyrenees, have this so he has some G.P in him someplace. He looks NOTHING like them, lol. He is a sweet boy, Willy likes to play with him.

The Wisdom DNA Test Kit for Dogs,

I've looked into this a bit farther, and ha, it's possible that this Thread may become more of a Product Evaluation, than the original general question I posed originally.

Anyway, if someone is interested in purchasing this Kit, I found that getting it directly from the Mfgr (Wisdom) is (at this time) cheaper.
$20 off and free shipping ($60). Price is usually $80.
Again, this is research NOT a sales pitch.

I did a little looking around, and you can see a sample Report at...
    http://www.wisdompanel.com/view/bin/...20Insights.pdf

Then, I looked at the FAQ, which you may read at...
    http://www.wisdompanel.com/faq.html

This test is NOT for Purebreds.
It only goes to a Tertiary level (major-minor-trace).

Now... will I test my animals ?
Probably, I'll do my Male Yorkie Sneakers first, no way he can be a purebred weighing TEN pounds. That's not a breed standard. My little Becca is more standard breed then he is, though they have the same Parents. Brother/Sister about two litters apart (I think), and 1.5 years apart in age.

I hope that if anyone pursues this, please come back and let all of us know how it worked for you.

    Have a good Day !

I really wouldn't spend my money on those but that's just me. They are hardly ever accurate.

    luvofallhorses,

That may be true, but it depends on how careful one is in collecting the sample for one thing.

May I ask, just how do you know of that accuracy ? (of the lack of)
Have you used this test before, compared it with other Kits ?

I did a genetic testing on Logan, using a saliva swab.
I already knew she was part German Shephard, and because she "talks/howls" and her ears are long (etc) I thought she may have some beagle in her. I was right. That's what the results were. Also a wee bit of Bernese Mountain Dog and I can see that in her coloring. I thought the test was right on.

My vet offered to do blood work and send it to a lab, but I had already had this test done. It as fun.

I have it framed and her photo is on it. I promise to detail what they said. Right now, kinda over busy but I promise I will. Nighttime is the only chance I get to myself for a few hours.

I read an article about DNA tests like this. The results I've seen have been outragous and very unlikely. I would maybe do it sometime on my new puppy because she is a cross of two breeds.

As for Pyrs being the only dogs with rear dewclaws. They are not. What about the Beuceron?
