    Manufacturer expands pet food recall

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nature's Variety has expanded its recall of chicken-flavored pet food because of concerns over salmonella.

The Lincoln, Neb.-based company said Monday that the raw, frozen food is being recalled because it could be contaminated with salmonella.

The recall includes three-pound packages of chicken medallions, six-pound packages of chicken patties and two-pound packages of chicken chubs.

Initially, the company recalled only packages with a best-by date of Nov. 10, 2010. Now packages with best-by dates of Oct. 29 and Nov. 9, 2010, are also being recalled.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Pets can also become ill if they consume the bacteria.

It's not just pet food being recalled for Salmonella. I just heard on the radio this morning that they are recalling 2 flavors of Pringles chips for the same thing.

Not really pet related, but makes you wonder what is amiss in our food supply system (pet or human) that is making recalls practically a daily thing now?

Nothing's amiss, the system is working as designed.

Problems which would have gone unseen are now being found, taken care of, and eliminated.

We could go back to the good old days where people just got salmonella poisoning and nothing was done about it.

OR, we could go back even further, to when every home had a "kitchen garden" and grew it's own. But that would return us to only eating foods "in season," and I happen to like having year round access, ha ha.

But I agree, it seems to be a LOT of notices recently. Perhaps due to the economy, and cut backs? Dunno.
