Fecal Sample Question

When I called the vet about Basil's fur color change, they said they would eventually want me to bring in a stool sample. Um...how do I do that? Follow him into the litter box? Won't it be covered in kitty litter?

Any advice would be great.

Yep, and I don't think the litter matters much as they are counting on a fairly large quantity. They usually put it under a microscope - and they can tell litter from foreign objects etc.

I usually just plop it in a baggie. Just make sure you have the correct cat! LOL!

LOL LOL Gotta love those stool samples. Following him to the 'restroom' would be a good way to distinguish which poopie is his if all 3 share the same litter box. Alternatively, you could always put him in a separate room with his own box for a few hours or something and go and collect it from there. However, fresh poopie is the best, and you can keep it fresh by putting it in the refrigerator if the vet visit is several hours or even a day from when you collected the poopie! LOL

Just scoop out the poop and plop it in a plastic bag. I'm a tech and trust me it doesn't matter if theres litter on it.

You COULD always stand there and hold a baggie under his butt while he goes (he he he). Try doing it with 6 cats!!

Hey Neko1, you're being a vet tech and everything...I have a question. I've heard people tell me that their vet asks them to get a urine sample from their cat. I always assume they mean stool sample, but some insist the vet tells them urine sample. What does one do to get it?? Ask the kitty to pee in cup??

Getting a unine sample has to be the hardest thing this side of standing on a pin head!

Ahhh if only kitty would pee in a cup!!! Couple of suggestions:
1. Empty all the litter out of the box and hope kitty goes in it.
2. Use a product called NoSorb. It is tiny black pellets that you use instead of litter. When your kitty urinates in it, the urine pours right off the pellets. This way you can just tip the litter box and watch the pee pee roll right into the container given. (again, hopefully)
3. If kitty is too reluctant to do either of these, a trip to the v.e.t. is necessary. Provide access to water but no box for a little while so kitty's bladder can get full. With a full bladder the Dr. can squeeze kitty's bladder to get the urine out. (note: some kitties do not like this procedure and will fight you all the way)
4. If all else fails, a cystocentesis will be needed. Another trip to the vet. The Dr. will draw out the urine from kitty's bladder with a syringe. (again kitty needs somewhat of a full bladder).
Unfortunatley, getting a urine sample from a cat sucks.

yes, you will have to follow him, after he eats, it shouldnt be long before he uses the box. do you ever feed him canned food? that will hurry him to the box! I thought the same thing, it will be covered with litter, but it doesn't matter...and didnt the vet give you a little plastic container for the sample? thats what you bring it in to them in.

I remember once having to wait and watch for one of them to go, can't remember which one now, maybe it was Emma.

DUH- You all have it TOTALLY WRONG! Why must I interject wisdom amongst you? YOU PUT A DIAPER ON YOUR CAT! Then you get poop and pee all at the same time, belonging to the correct cat! Just don't mix it up with the baby's diaper....
