Scooting her bum on the floor

My 1 yr old female "tortie" was doing something very strange. I saw her do it a few times, she was scooting her bum on the floor. I never seen her do this before. Is there a reason for doing this behaviour. Pleas let me know, i just hop nothing wrong with her. I have notice, my other males cats do it. Is it just female cats?

Can be itching because of worms (I've read that last week you wrote about abother of your cats having worms).

Yes my Toby, i don't you about but I figured he has worms because he didn't get is second deworming done. We are giving liquid med for roundworms. I don't know if he has roundworms or not, it might me tapeworms and if it is then he would have to get an injection to get rid of the tapeworms. My Toby fur is dull looking, is that because he might have tapeworms.

I agree with Barbara that Sabrina may be itchy from the worms.

Um, this is kind of gross, but the couple times I have caught my tabby cat, Saima, "scooting her bum" on the floor it was because she had, um, a dingleberry (she did not have worms), if you know what I mean. So, her way to get the dingleberry off was to slide her butt along the floor. ACK ACK ACK!!!

No! Don't do that, Saima! So much fun to clean *that* up!

Too bad she couldn't just call out to me and say, "help me wipe my bum!" LOL!! Oh well. That's life with a cat...

By the way, don't you agree that watching a cat scoot along the floor like that is funny to see? It's like something from a cartoon!

Oops! Is Toby the one who was scooting or Sabrina?

If it doesn't clear up quickly you might want to check with your vet. In dogs, this is sometimes caused by impacted anal glands. I've never heard of this in cats, but better safe than sorry, don't you think???

I would at least call the vet and ask them about it. It could be worms. It's better to be safe than sorry. Please keep us posted. Good luck.

Krazy-about-cats, It sounds to me as though she has pin-worms. I suspect that an off the shelf de-wormer will do the job. And if she doesn't have worms, then the meds will not hurt her.

What happened with Sabrina re this behavior? My Mitzi was doing the same thing last night - scooting her butt across the carpet She let me clean a "dingle berry" off her bottom, ate a little bit, threw up, ate some cat grass and then seemed to be a bit docile all evening, but she's fine today. Was it a one-time thing with Sabrina or did you take her to the vet? Please let me know as I'm about to call my vet about Mitzi if it continues. I've got my fingers crossed it was just a tummy ache and all is better now. Thanks!

The only time I've ever seen Peanut do this was when she had a UTI. I would watch Mitzi's litterbox usage and if she shows any other signs of UTI, to the vet! It may have just been a one time thing so I would just keep an eye on her rather than rush her right over.

Cubby has gone through this a few times. I have to take him into the vet to get his anal glands drained. I don't know how to do it my self but the vet told me I can if I want to learn how to. This morning I noticed Cubby started doing it again. When I tried to chase him down to find out what was going on he started bathing him self so I walked away and noticed a piece of poo on the floor. I think it got stuck to his bum and he couldn't get it off.

I to think it is a funny sight to see Cubby doing the rubbing on the floor thing but then I see vet bills. At my vet they give me a discount by how much they get out of him. The first time they had to drain them they had to use more paper towel, the sencond time they didn't get much out of him so I got a very nice discount. Now that I know what it means with Cubby I take him in right away that way they don't get very much and it doesn't stink as bad.

Good luck take him into the vet, it only takes about 5 to 10 minutes to drain them..

P.S. Also after so many drainings they will remove the glands. I don't know how many they need to have in a certain amount of time.

It apparently (hopefully?) was just a little bit of poo, which she let me gently excrete - she NEVER lets me touch her back there, so I knew I was doing the right thing as she was fine with me handling her. I've never done this before, but somehow I instinctively knew what to do - after checking a few websites on how to do it, apparently I did it right and she's fine now. I too had visions of $$ flying out of my wallet for a trip to the vet. I am keeping a close eye on her just in case.
