    Spotted Tongues

We were at my parents house yesterday and my mom says, "Hey, I have a question for you to ask on PT." She said everyone is alwys asking her about the spots on both Taggert and Dazzi's tongue. (Taggert is an Airedale mix, Dazzi is a Golden mix) Niether has chow in them. Are there other breeds that have colored tongues or commonly get spots?

Shar-pei's have a blue-black tongue and can also have a spotted tongue, along with chows.

Killian has a black spot on his tongue and I've heard through the GSD bb that some other GSDs have it, too.

It is probably just be a discoloration in the pigmentation. I know of quite a few dogs that do not have chow or shar-pei in them and have black spots on their tounges. I even know a purebred Golden retriever that has 2 black spots on his fur (excellent lines though) It is just a fluke thing. just like we have birth marks and such our pigment is different in that area!

Kersey my GSD/rottie mix has spots on her tongue also. When I first adopted her, the adoption people said she had chow in her because of her spots, but she does not have any chow.

    Taggart is SO adorable!

Although my dogs don't have any spots on their tongues, it is not uncommon for Golden Retrievers to have that dark pigmentation. I understand it to be completely acceptable as well. Some people wrongly believe it means they have Chow in them!!

I have to admit that I have never seen a dog with a spotted tonque but I have heard of it. That is too cute!

Buddy has black spots on the floor of his mouth! I thought he was eating dirt at first-as he wouldn't let me look under his tounge!!

Addie has a spotted tongue on top with a black underside. I was told, she had Sharpei in her, so I assume that's were she got the tongue from. I have also seen Goldens with spotted tongues, but I do not think all that common.

Well, our old dog, Breezy, had black spot on her tongue and she wasn't chow or shar-pei. What I heard was, if your dog has black spots on it's tongue, it means they're smart. It certainly could be true, considering what a smart dog my Breezers was.
