Is she happy with us?

We got our 10 month old dog, Daizy back in May from her breeder. She had originally been bought, along with her brother, by a big family with lost of kids, cats and other dogs. Then the mother decided to go back to work and couldn't be home with all the animals anymore so they took her and her brother back. Her brother went to another home about a half hour from us. My husband and I had talked for a few years about getting a bassett hound but never decided till he herd about this dog from a guy he worked with. We kind of took it as a sign and went to see her. The breeder was also a stay at home mom with LOTS of kids and other dogs. The puppy (5mos. old at the time) seemed very happy. After seeing those floppy ears and sad eyes we couldn't resist. Now we have had her for about 5 mos. and all we have is a cat. No kids or other dogs to play with. She is left alone during the day when we are at work but is out of her kennel all evening. I can't help but wonder if she is happy? Did we do right by her by bringing her into our lives? Our house can't handle another dog-or cat. For the most part she seems happy being with us. She wants to lay with us on the couch and is very excited to see us in the evening when we get home. I apologize if this is a boring topic, but I can't help but wonder-she can get on our nerves REALLY bad sometimes but I still love her and want her to be happy. Any opinions or advice? It might be that your dog is somewhat used to having kids or other dogs to play with.I think you should wate about a month and if you thinks your dog is still not happy you might what to think about getting another dog.I know my dog went through the same thing but as soon as we got another small puppy my dog was very happy.I hope I helped!!

Your dog is still a puppy, so she is going to be handful no matter what. It sounds like she is happy with you. She does not destroy things or pee or cry or wail when you are gone. How big is the kennel? We let our dog have the run of the kitchen when we are gone. We put up a pet gate, so she can have a little more running room. I also take her to the local dog park every weekend so she can socialize. It sure helps her get her energy out and she loves it.

It really sounds to me like your dog is happy. Stop being so hard on yourselves!!! Dogs are much easier to please than people.

Make sure that you devote some special time to her each day and preferably at the same time. Find some form of exercise which she enjoys and play some doggie games with her. Even as little as 20 minutes to a half hour will really make a big difference to her. But please be consistant and make it a priority in your life. Dogs love special times and routines. But the best part will be that you will find that you will enjoy these play and exercise sessions as much as she does. Good luck and don't give up on your puppy.
