PETA ties beheading to animal abuse

An animal rights group attempted to purchase an ad in a Sun Media-owned newspaper which compares the beheading of Tim McLean Jr. to the slaughter of animals.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals officials hoped to run an ad this week in the Portage Daily Graphic that uses lines such as, "An innocent young victim's throat is cut" and "The man with the knife shows no emotion."

The description leads the reader to believe it's describing McLean's death aboard a Greyhound bus last week about 20 km west of Portage la Prairie. Only later is it revealed the ad is referring to the slaughterhouse treatment of animals.

"We're really challenging everyone who was shocked by this horrendous crime against Tim McLean to go to our website and see for themselves that animals every day go through exactly what he went through," PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt told the Winnipeg Sun yesterday.

Barry Clayton, publisher for the Portage Daily Graphic, said the ad would not appear in his newspaper.

PETA has made the text available on its website.

One friend of McLean's said PETA's ad is misguided. "I'm behind animal protection ... but don't try and take away from what Tim was. He was a great person," said Doug Mitchell, who helped organize a vigil for McLean at the Manitoba Legislature last weekend.

"It just seems they're trying to take that away from the light. I know Tim loved animals ... but don't run something so gruesome with something else that's gruesome."

PETA did not contact McLean's family regarding the ad, Rajt said. She said McLean's death was horrific and that "our hearts go out to his family."

One ethics specialist described the ad as deliberately shocking.

"It's meant to draw attention to their cause," said Arthur Schafer, director of the University of Manitoba's Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics.

The ad seems geared towards forcing people to confront the treatment and slaughter of animals, he said, adding it could backfire and not generate sympathy for animals at all.

"It's timing is such I think it will massively turn people off," said Schafer.

Peter Miller, a scholar in philosophy and ethics at the University of Winnipeg, said the ad is a gamble on PETA's part.

"I would think (the ad) would cause harm for the friends and family of McLean. Others may be revolted by it or think it's in bad taste," said Miller. McLean's family could not be reached for comment yesterday.

It seems Peta is using pornography now to get some of their messages across.

I think it's overly prudish to refer to the ad as pornograhy. Many ads
use nude or barely clothed people in them. Not saying it's right, just that
    it happens regularly.

As to the first ad, it's in very poor taste & will not change hearts or
    help abused animals.

My wording may have been a bit strong. I don't see the actual ads as all out hard core pornography, but the one gal is a pornography star and they are having her do the ad. They are also awarding the bed sheets she posed nude on as a prize. Perhaps I am prudish, it just came as a surprise to me, and comes across to me as rather tasteless in getting any message across.

ETA: I should say as to the OP, I feel it's an exploitation of a horrible and sickening tragedy and should not be used in their campaign.

Well for myself I don't like naked type advertising, I think it's highly overdone in the country in general, not just by PETA. It's overused and just boring at this point. I also think it's in poor taste to use a porn star naked as a spokesperson and offer up her sheets for a prize. Yuck, no thanks.

If that makes me a prude, then I'll happily be a prude.

Thanks Jess for the great sig of my kids!

In a way I'm almost relieved that their tactics are so uniformly trashy. It might make it harder to confuse them with real animal-rights workers. But then, I'm a bit of a pollyanna. They're the tabloid shock-jocks of the charity world.

Doesn't surprise me one bit. They have done this with the Holocaust where they compared the treatment of Jewish people in concentration camps to the conditions and treatment of animals in slaughter houses.

It DOES say she "bares skin" for animals' skin, and she clearly isn't wearing any clothing in the ad that we can see, so personally that can be chalked up to at the very least softcore porn, which is still a type of pornography and in my opinion, is still wrong and dirty.

EDIT: Nope, if you view the full ad, you can tell she's completely naked in it. Tsk tsk.

I've never been a fan of PETA or their extremist acts and beliefs. You all know I love and care for animals and their welfare, but that's just extreme.

Porno or not is one thing - the athlete did make a decision.

But that poor dead young man, with his death being used as a political stunt - that is beyond and beneath slime and gutter. Seems to me the publication they went to refused to run it. Good for them!
