    When I Don't Understand

My dear, beloved human, the sunshine of my days!
You make my life a paradise in very many ways.
My tasty food, my comfy bed, your kind and loving touch
Is all that I could hope for, and I love you, oh, so much!

When my ancestors roamed the woods in mud and sleet and cold
We we led a wild, exciting life - but never got too old.
With seldom quite enough to eat, and bigger creatures near
Our days were educational, but often fraught with fear.

In Nature we'd have lived a few short years, then met our end.
    Maturity's a mystery - I beg your patience, friend,
For living with a human's more than we're cut out to know
When sometimes there are scary places that we need to go.

Why stick me with a needle? Why put gunk in my ears?
I cannot comprehend that these are prices paid for years
To spend in happy comfort with my human by my side -
Please don't be angry if I bite or scratch or run and hide.

I know your heart in all its warmth, so now how can it be
That suddenly you now refuse to share your food with me?
You make me swallow nasty things, you get my fur all wet -
It frightens me, for these are things we cannot fathom yet.

I whimper, plead, or thrash in fear, it seems so awfully wrong -
But know that I'll forgive you, friend, before too very long!
This long life isn't natural, this ease hard to maintain
But in your heart you know that you're protecting me from pain.

Oh! I didn't know whether to cry or laugh!

I've seen that look when I clean the ear gunk out, with the ear cleaner and tehe wipes. He he, it's "How COULD you, MO-OM?!!"

Did you write this? Very clever.

Thank you! Yes, I wrote it. Smudge doesn't run away, and he's careful not to scratch TOO hard, but he gives me the Big Eyes and a pitiful little squeak when I cart him off for his checkup.

    Love, Columbine

I'm gonna show this to Yodie Yodie when I have to put "gunk" in her ears. I'm sure she'll understand. LOL
    Blessings,
    Mary
