    Snowshoes or Siamese??

Hi, everyone at Pet Talk! I am interested about getting a Siamese or Snowshoe kitten in the future. Which one would be better? And should it be a male or female? I have three kitties already; two females (Nellie, 4 and Nitschke 6 mos.) and 1 male (Reggie, 1 1/2). I plan to get it at an animal shelter near my home. Also, in my family, there are three kids: Two boys, ages 5 & 10, and one girl age 13. Thanks for your help!!!!!!!

    Hi,

We consider what are commonly referred to as Snowshoes as Half Siamese.

There is an official breed called Snowshoe, but you'll never find one, they are so rare.
What we call Snowshoe are Siamese crossed with an DSH bicolor, such as a Tuxedo.

Any dilution of the Siamese temperament will also tend to dilute the strong personality traits of the cat.
So, if you get a full bred Siamese cat, expect the rather high-strung, obsessive, dominant, needy personality.
Snowshoes are more mellow and accepting. More like the DSH.

It would be a toss up whether you get a male or female. I would lean toward another male, IF your male isn't really dominant and likely to spray or be territorial.

As a general rule, I wouldn't add another young female to your 2 young females. Keep a 5 year difference in cats of the same gender.

If I may, there is a rescue organization in CA. that specializes in Siamese and Siamese mixes.

    siameserescue.org
    the CA centers.

Thanks for rescuing and best of luck in finding your future Meezer!

My Siamese is a great cat, very loving and smart. He is an Applehead or Traditional Siamese. They are called Applehead because they have a large head and he seems to be smarter than any cat I've heard of. I love my cat, he is a great pet, very cooperative, and takes well to training.

I have a Siamese cat. She is not like others it seems! She is very vocal but not needy, dominant, etc. WHATSOEVER! I am the only human she will interact with on any sort of "regular" basis. She usually doesn't have anything to do with my husband, either, and he's been there her whole life!

    Thanks for your help!

Thanks for your help about snowshoes and siamese! It was really helpful when rosethecopycat said that a male would be better for my household. I actually have a Lynx Point Siamese named Nellie, very pretty and loving. I am looking to get a male Seal/Chocolate point of a snowshoe or siamese. Probably a Siamese, because it seems they aren't as rare and everybody likes them. But if a Snowshoe kitten comes along in a shelter, and it is a male, I just might get it. So thanks for your help and have a purrfectly wonderful Saturday! If anyone else wants to add about this, please do so! The more info/advice, the better! Thanks!
