    R.i.p.

Today at work a very snoody lady came in. She asked if we could put her three dogs to sleep. We told her we could. She filled out her paperwork and brought the dogs in. We weighed them and turned to ask her if she wanted to be present when they passed. She said "No. I just want their collars. I would rather never see them again." I was so shocked. She didn't care about these dogs. I asked her why she was having the dogs put to sleep. If they were agressive. She said "No, they are nice dogs. I just don't want them anymore."

The first dog was a sweet little 8 month old Pittie boy. He was sweet as pie and didn't quite understand why he was there. We put a muzzel on him and slid the needle in his leg. A few seconds later he was gone.

The next were two 75lb Black Lab mixes. About 5 yrs old. Sweetest dogs I've ever met. Loved to give kisses. Their ears were fly bitten to the point they were bleeding. We put muzzels on each of them and the vet put the first one down. I think the second dog knew his buddy was dead. He looked at his friend, tucked his tail and started crying. About a minute later he too was dead.

As I was bagging up these dogs I started to tear up. I've helped put a lot of dogs down, but these dogs touched me. They were good dogs. They had no reason to die. The puppy had years of life ahead of him, but thanks to an uncareing and unreponsible owner who just didn't want the dogs anymore they are now in a trash bag in a freezer.

Stupid woman. I can't believe she just treats living creatures as disposable objects. Hopefully, she'll get whats coming to her....

Sometimes some vets ask the owner if they can try and find a home for them, but some owners insist it's "My pet" and they want it "Put down."

I wish that sort of thing was reportable to a Humane Society or something.

It's tempting to want to leave the corpses on her doorstep! But she would figure out who...

I don't think there are words to properly describe that heartless person (I cannot call her a woman).

I hope you feel better, Lute.

    *bursts into tears*

    How heartless!!!!

I'm so sorry you had to do this, it must have just torn you up.
This really upsets me. She walks in and "disposes" of these wonderful, healthy, loving dogs, without a second thought.

We would have given ANYTHING to save our Sherman, and we couldn't. It just isn't fair.

That's soo odd. Here in our state unless the dog's are terminally ill or have an illness that wont improve or if the dog is in pain is the only way an onwer cna put them to sleep. Other wise the vet tell them to go to the local shelter and give them away or the vet's will take them into their pratice and try to adopt them out. Same thing with cats..thats actaully how I inquried my 3 cats. Anyway that is soo sad i am sorry you had to deal with that today

I'm surprised the vet would even do it, based on their ages. I don't think I could have stood to see that happen.

That is a horrible thing. I don't understand how people can be so heartless to these poor innocent creatures.

    Poor Loki, Nate, and Kappy

I wish your vet would have contacted a rescue. A lot of times that's what vets up here will do despite it being against the law. (If the dogs truly have nothing wrong with them.)

At least the woman didn't just take them to the pound where they probably would have suffered before dieing.

p.s. Her just dropping the dogs off like that, but asking for the collars puts up little red flags. (Was this a domestic issue? If she did care enough to want something to remember them by, why didn't she try to find them homes first? Does she plan on just getting other dogs to throw away?) Also thinking... Does your clinic scan healthy dogs for microchips to see if these dogs actually do belong to these people before euth'ing? I'm sure a rescue would want to know if someone was doing this to one of their dogs... or it could prove the person that brought them in was just a vindictive neighbor or something.

Please, if your dog is arthritic look into getting it Elk Velvet Antler. Look up my posts on it, PM me, or look it up on a search engine; but please if you love your dog and want it to live many more years consider this option. I've seen so many posts on here about dogs needlessly suffering. I can't make a new post about EVA every time so this plea is going here. EVA also helps with other ailments such as anemia.

Very good questions, Crow_noir. This was a very bad situation and I think it was handled poorly, to say the least.

I'm sorry for the lame excuse. I've only worked at this vets for a little over a week. This is just what I was told. I don't agree with it either.

We knew the dogs were hers because she had brought them in before for their vacc. and a couple minor problems.

At least I have some peace of mind knowing these were her dogs and that more than likely this is one of the kinder fates they were likely to have.

Lute, don't ever be too hard on yourself. This job will get emotionally draining very quickly. Look at all the positive things you will be able to do and all of the animals you can help.

The longer you are there and the more experience you get, the more "credibility" you'll get. Hopefully the main vet will give you a good review and a letter of referral.

When you get to that point maybe you can offer a few suggestions on how to better the practice.

If you do really good there and "pass" with flying colors YOU can start interviewing other clinics and finding out their policies and how they handle certain situations. Maybe you can find a few that you like and see if they need anyone else on their team with similar views.

Or maybe you'll be the thread of moral support that others like you are the current clinic need to stand up and make changes happen at the current clinic.

For now though just get a feel for how things work around there. Stay strong and keep your chin up. If you need to come to PT and vent about your worse days (of course we'd love to hear about your great ones too! ...while still respecting patient confidentiality of course.)

That is just horrible. I get pretty peeved when people bring animals to the shelter along with the excuse 'I don't want them anymore', but I suppose at least they're giving them a shot at a better life. How harrowing for you to have to witness irresponsible ownership in full swing. I found euthanasia surprisingly easy to bear witness to whilst I was working at a vets, but I know that if I'd have seen it performed on perfectly healthy animals, then I too would have felt horribly guilty.
